Associate Professor Felicity Cox BACHELOR of SPEECH and HEARING SCIENCES Administered by the Linguistics Department in the Faculty of Human Sciences Associate Professor Felicity Cox

Purpose of the degree This degree provides students with a range of basic skills and background knowledge required in various speech and hearing science professional careers.

Purpose of the degree It is designed to prepare students for: further vocational study at Masters level in clinical areas such as audiology and speech-language pathology further study in preparation for research and development careers in areas of speech and hearing science and technology.

Clinical Training This degree is NOT a clinical degree. To become clinicians, Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Science graduates MUST obtain further professional qualifications, such as the relevant clinical masters degrees offered by Macquarie University. Entry to the BSpHSc does not guarantee entry to a clinical masters degree.

Clinical Accreditation To qualify as a clinical Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist, students must undertake further postgraduate studies, such as the Master of Clinical Audiology or Speech and Language Pathology.

Speech & Hearing Research Graduates may wish to undertake further postgraduate studies in speech and/or hearing science or in related areas of linguistics.

A Linguistics Degree Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences is a linguistics degree. Students who don’t go on to clinical or research masters degrees have a solid undergraduate degree in linguistics and communication that will take them into the workforce. Graduates who have not chosen a postgraduate pathway have gone on work in areas such as speech technology, marketing of speech technology aids and telecommunications.

Custom-made degree The beauty of the Macquarie degree is in its flexibility. Students design their own individual degree program. 30% of the degree = electives. A full-time load is 4 subjects per semester for 3 years but part-time study is possible. Macquarie also has compulsory units designed to broaden student’s knowledge base and participation.

ATAR The ATAR cutoff is typically in the mid 80s Students can be granted up to 9 bonus points to study at Macquarie. Academic Advantage, Macquarie’s bonus points scheme, allows a maximum of 5 points determined by HSC results.

Other bonus points schemes An additional 4 points may be obtained from various other bonus points schemes such as Elite Athletes and Artistic Performers program Rural bonus points scheme Educational access scheme Information about these schemes is available on the MQ website http://mq.edu.au/future_students/ undergraduate/bonus_points/

Advice regarding preferences Students should put the Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences as their 1st preference if they want to do Speech and Hearing at Macquarie. Their 2nd preference should be MQ BA Students who don’t receive an offer for MQ Speech and Hearing should accept an MQ BA offer. Students who do well in their first semester of university can transfer directly into the BSpHSc.

Why choose Macquarie? Flexibility – choice of electives 5 years - students get a Bachelors + Masters degree Scope to move between speech and audiology, to speech research, technology or other speech science based field Small program Excellent on-campus clinical and research facilities Highly experienced, world-class researchers as lecturers and authors of standard texts Beautiful campus, state-of-the-art facilities

Hearing Hub and Cochlear A new special purpose building will open on campus this year. The hearing hub will house our audiology and speech pathology clinics, our research labs and centres and government organisations including Australian Hearing. Industry partner Cochlear, the world leader in cochlear implants, has opened its international headquarters on campus.

Hearing Hub Our speech and hearing clinics and research facilities will be moving here.

Previous students Previous Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Science students have gone on to work in industry, in clinical settings, and in research related fields. As an example of their work: pioneering the use of a new speech test for deaf children. working with the ultrasound to assess the speech production capabilities of people with speech difficulties. assisting with the development of more natural synthesised voices in computer applications.

Your students’ brilliant careers Will one of your students be the first person to find a cure for dyslexia, develop a more reliable technique for voice identification, or discover a way to help children with cochlear implants cope in noisy classrooms? The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences could be the beginning of their brilliant career!
