Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Objectives: -List reasons that might prevent a person from seeking help for a mental disorder. -Identify four types of mental health professionals. -Describe some general types of treatment for mental disorders.
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Locating Community Resources: -Each year, about 20% of Americans experience the symptoms of a mental disorder. -The majority of these people do not seek help. -Sometimes people don’t recognize the signs of a mental disorder or they may have been told that, with will power alone, they can overcome the problem. Or they may not know where to go for help.
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders 1st step- recognizing the need for help. -do not ignore the warning signs of mental disorders. -treat mental disorders the way you would treat a physical illness -try to show your problems with an adult you trust
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Types of Mental Health Professionals -Mental health professionals are trained to recognize mental disorders and to treat them -The type of treatment the offer depends upon their training: -Psychiatrists -Clinical Psychologists -Social Workers -Mental Health Counselor
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Psychiatrists: -Medical & Psychology training -Rules out physical causes for symptoms -Can prescribe medications Neurologists: -a physician who treats physical disorders of the nervous system
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Clinical Psychologists: -trained to recognize and treat behavior that is not normal -Ph.D in Psychology and 2 years of practical training in clinics / hospitals
Section 4: Treating Mental Disorders Social Workers: -listen to and advise people -act as a link between people who need help and community resources that provide help. Psychiatric Social Worker- help people to accept and adjust to an illness.
