SARAJEVO BUSINESS FROUM Brčko district of Bosnia and Herzegovina NEEDS PORT EQIPMENTS JP “LUKA BRČKO”d.o.o. Brčko district of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo, 22./23.05.2017.

PORT HISTORY In the 16th century the shipping began with the so called horse pulling carriages. At that time Brčko was the only crossing over the river Sava. Besides logs, the most commonly shipped goods were coal and industrial stone (excavated near Bosanski Brod). In the second half of the 17th century the shipping with steam boats and oar boats begins.Regarding the fact that those were steam boats and that Brčko was located at half way form Belgrade to Sisak which had coal mines in its hinterland, those boats would stop at the present location of Port Brčko to conduct the loading of coal onto ships which was performed manually by carts. In the period of 1887-90 the first passenger ship line was established on the Županja-Brčko-Rača-Zvornik waterway. A railway bridge was built across the Sava river and in 1894 a railway connection between Vinkovci and Brčko was established. In 1946 the railway between Brčko and Banovići was constructed and with this the port was directly connected to the Tuzla basin via railway. The port as we know it today was built in 1913 and upgraded in the period between 1952 and 1962. In 1953 the banks of the port are beginning to be used officially for transport and the Company for river transport and port is being founded.
