MHEWS-A Consortium of Operations / SEE Background MHEWS-A Consortium of Operations / SEE In 2014 ended successful WMO / EU project “Building Resilience to Disasters in the Western Balkans and Turkey” 2nd phase (two years) DRR project in SEE follow up of the “ Regional Programme on DRR in SEE” (1st phase DRR project) At the 2015 ICSEED meeting beneficiaries expressed the need for follow up in line with the concept presented at the WMO Symposium on MHEWS during the 2015 UN World Conference on DRR in Sendai, Japan The concept was reiterated in April 2016 at the 2016 EC-WG-DRR meeting with the rational based on the events in mid-May 2014, when Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia faced severe flooding, in some places the worst in 120 years achievement of a good practice after provision of meteorological support following the UNHCR request to the WMO during the refugee crisis in Europe 2016 EC WG DRR issued recommendation on developing new projects such as a SEE MHEWS-A project with a perspective to collaborate with other regional projects

MHEWS-A Consortium of Operations / SEE Background MHEWS-A Consortium of Operations / SEE WMO in cooperation with and financial support of the U.S. Agency for International Development - USAID initiated SEE-MHEWS-A project which aims to strengthen the existing early warning capacity in the region October 2016 - Regional Conference on SEE MHEWS marked the commencement of the SEE-MHEWS-A project and comprised of Project kick-off meeting Workshop on CAP 2016 ICSEED Regional Conference achievement starting of the first phase of the SEE-MHEWS-A implementation ICSEED commitment to participate the project 17 PRs from the SEE + Ukraine cooperative foundation for project implementation also joined by the World Bank successful training on CAP implementation cbs-16@wmo.int

SEE MHEWS-A Project as a Template for Other Regions Following the 2016 EC WG DRR recommendation SEE MHEWS-A project was succesfully presented at the 2016 Wilton Park Conference, Wiston House, United Kingdom “Flooding in the Greater Horn of Africa: building effective early warning systems ” 28th Session of Interstate Council on Hydrometeorology of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Dushanbe, Tajikistan President RA I supported an initiative of RA VI on regional collaboration between RA I, RA II and RA VI on MHEWS, particularly linking the North African region that has Mediterranean climate with Europe and Middle East Recent meeting of the WMO SG, Mr. Petteri Taalas with Mr. Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development opened possibility to expand the EWS implementation initiated by MHEWS-A project in SE Europe into Central Asia under the EC DG DEVCO support cbs-16@wmo.int
