2016 Maintenance Innovation Challenge STEM CENTERLINE MEASURING (SCM) FIXTURE PROBLEM STATEMENT The current measuring procedure to obtain a crucial dimension for 5 inch ball valve modification cannot be accomplished mechanically and is significantly time consuming. Specially trained Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) group required. Bulky, fragile, specialized CMM equipment required. Procedure can only be accomplished overnight. CMM group tasks are based on priority. Precision machine assembly needs to be removed to take dimensions between each machining pass. Reinstallation and realignment of machine assembly can take up to 8 hours (Needs to be aligned on X, Y, and Z axes). BENEFITS No specialized training required. Procedure with SCM Fixture, uses basic Precision Measuring Equipment. SCM Fixture is lightweight, portable, durable, and easy to install. (Approx. 20 lbs. 22” L by 6” W [widest point]) Procedure can be accomplished at anytime of the day. Projected man-hour cost reduction of 93%. Mechanics can perform procedure as needed. Machine assembly does not need to be removed to complete measurement procedure. SCM Fixture can remain installed during machining process. Measuring can remain consistent throughout the machining process. TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION A modified replica stem and stem retainer was manufactured to plan specifications, using re-purposed aluminum bar stock, to provide the mechanics with a quick and basic way to accomplish measurements mechanically. The stem diameter has a machined radius “cut out” to create a tangible, “stem centerline” plane. A groove was machined into the modified replica stem so an o-ring could be installed to assist in the centering of the replica stem in the stem bore. The replica stem retainer was installed and fixed to replica stem. SCM Fixture can now be secured using temporary fasteners and the existing holes in the valve body. Can easily be transferred from valve to valve to accomplish multiple measurements. GRAPHIC
