CFAS Membership Update Since fall 2015, the number of total CFAS representatives has increased from 294 to 379 Medical schools have appointed 22 representatives to CFAS since fall 2015 In 2016, there were a total of 82 CFAS representatives with PhD or MD-PhD degrees New member societies added since 2014: American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons American College of Cardiology American College of Physicians American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology Association of Pediatric Program Directors Center for Medicine after the Holocaust

And Speaking of Chairs… Three CFAS reps presented at the 2016 “Executive Development Seminar for New Associate Deans and Department Chairs” (including the CFAS Chair) Vin Pellegrini, Cathy Pipas, and Amy Young Highlighted a unique opportunity for CFAS to address issues critical to chairs of all stripe Looking into ways to invite interested parties, such as chairs, to participate in CFAS activities Open to your ideas on being effective

And Speaking of Expanding Our Base… CFAS Affiliates system is ready to role Allows past CAS representatives as well as past CFAS reps to enroll in CFAS meetings and activities They may not serve on the ad board or vote in our elections for leadership, but they may network, share their knowledge, enjoy our meetings, present in our sessions, and otherwise participate in the CFAS community

Committee and Work Group Progress Program Committee Put together a preview of the Spring meeting earlier than ever Nominating and Engagement Committee Identified four new CFAS Ad Board members from a deep field of ~20 nominees Getting ready to select a new CFAS Chair Elect; selection will take place in Orlando this March

Committee and Work Group Progress CFAS Resilience Workgroup Continued to keep this issue front and center not only for CFAS but the AAMC overall Played a role in the June AAMC Leadership Forum, which was focused on wellbeing in academic medicine Launched an AAMC-wide website that is managed by CFAS

Committee and Work Group Progress Basic Science Workgroup New chair Gabriela Popescu, PhD Have discussed a number of issues around basic science/discovery science faculty, including decreasing role in curricula; adjusting to declining research funding; effects of mergers and acquisitions; importance of GME to basic scientists Looked a creating statements on research growth vs. sustainability and ideas on a systematic, sustained effort to educate the public about the role of the academic health center

Committee and Work Group Progress Value of Faculty as Educators Working Group Working on defining teaching activities and providing a framework to value them CFAS Advocacy Committee Working on creating ways to communicate advocacy messages to CFAS reps (a new web resource has just gone live on the CFAS site; additionally working on ways to engage societies more closely with CFAS activity and ensuring that CFAS meetings regularly have an advocacy component in at least one plenary session
