Feasibility study on LNG logistics - for reduced emissions from maritime transport LNG is considered to be an interesting alternative to other bunker fuels when IMO Annex VI rules are coming into force LNG lowers the emissions of SOx, NOx and PM and CO2 LNG requires new infrastructure in ports and onboard vessels. Design and technical solutions are to be developed Clean Baltic Sea Shipping project is under preparation and will address issues on design for ports and vessels as well as the supply system of LNG in order to have a well functioning LNG logistics for the maritime sector

Investment support programme for green shipping - for reduced emissions from maritime transport Economic incentives for shipping companies to invest in green technologies beyond the requirements of regulations is called for Focus should be on regular traffic with high frequency A joint investment support programme is proposed to be set up jointly by MS and to which shipping can apply for co-financing for investments in green technologies Details and rules are to be elaborated Experiences from Sweden shows positive results

Green pilots - environmental new routening Vessels will not follow rigid separation zones anymore they will go the environmental intelligent way!! Tailor-made Coastal Passage Plans (CPP) will: Save fuel Reduce emissions Reduce costs Provide cargo ”just in time” Create safe and secure shipping Allow controlling authorities to focus on ”risk vessels”

Green pilots - next generation concept ”Everybody knows where everybody´s going” Ships entering e-Nav area transmits its preliminary CPP to a MOS centre MOS centre processes relevant data (ships data, manoueverability, weather forecast, ice, current, traffic situation on route, planned ETA, available berth, nav. Warnings and NtM, tide, water level etc) MOS centre transmit prepared CPP back to the ship Master confirms and follows the CPP All ships will be monitored by the MOS centre Note: Colreg always in force!!!!!!

Green pilots – Operational aspects Officer on watch can see any ships CPP on its own navigation screen Ships deviating from its CPP will be flagged on all monitors in 30 M radius, including MOS monitors Ships can ”ask” any other ship about its intention by mouse click on the navigation screen Officer on watch can confirm the compliance of CPP or inform new intentions MOS monitors all ”conversation” between ships The use of VHF will be minimized

Conclusion Innovations are required to address the challenges of maritime transport The Motorways of the Sea concept supports eco-efficient co-modality and can contribute with an institutional framework and co-financing Close cooperation between business, academy and administrations is the key for success Now is time to act and we need to act together!
