The Importance of Organic Agriculture to the Baltic Sea results from the Beras-project and Case Study: Organic juice company Raikastamo Oy Chairman of the board, Mikko Rahtola

Organic Agriculture and the Baltic Sea Total field area (2008): Finland 150 335ha, 6,6 % Sweden 384 000ha, 15 % Estonia 87 300ha, 10 % Market share: Denmark, Schweitz 7 % Sweden 3 % Finland 1 % Estonia 0,3 % Production areas of Raikastamo Oy

Raikastamo Oy Established in 2008 Superior taste, organic quality, modern package and delivery Organic fresh apple juice, 250ml, 100 % apple Selling now in Finnish HoReCa- sector, biggest client IKEA and the wholesalers Choose the Organic Product of the Year 2009 in Finland

Leaches and Agriculture Total leaches to the Baltic Sea From agriculture: 41 % N, 33 % P In Finland: 50 % about N from agriculture 60 % about the P from agriculture

Benefits of the Organics Personal level Taste Residue free Inner quality (health?) No GMO:s Animal welfare Local products +/0 Contact producer- consumer or at least known origin Environmental level Biodiversity Sustainability Recycling Leakages Energy use Carbon emissions

Some results from the Beras-project Ecological production systems will decrease energy consumption by 40 % and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 % In Sweden, the potential for diminishing nitrogen leaches is 70-75 %, but if the Baltic states and Poland will choose Swedish conv. way, the leakage will increase by 50 % Main problem specialization of animals and fields Need of lays for binding the nutrients Minimizing imported feeds

Use of conventional fertilizers in Finland
