Coming Home: A project that inspires students to design their future homes while learning stuff!

First Steps: Choose a card to find where you live. Research building materials, weather conditions, and find other houses in your area to see what they look like. Choose your housing style. Research where these houses typically are constructed, what materials you need, and three pros and cons of your choice. Then make the house your own. You can draw your house, find pictures online of your house, or find pictures in a magazine. Write a paragraph about why you chose this house, interesting features, and how it fits your needs.

Floor Plan Now design your floor plan. You will divide the space inside your home to reflect the needs of your family. Consider things such as where will you put the kitchen, the bathrooms, how many stories will you have and how many bedrooms will you need. You may want to use these resources to help you get started. http://floorplanner.com/dashboard?signup=true http://www.roomsketcher.com/features/3d-floor-plans/ https://www.smartdraw.com/floor-plan/examples/ You can use one of these programs or you can draw your own plan using PowerPoint or on paper.

Room Designs Next you will pick three rooms to design. You can choose a color scheme, furniture, and accessories. Use the following slides to help you create rooms that follow the best principles of design. Think green. What materials can you use to save the Earth while staying within a reasonable budget. How can you use local stuff that helps build the economy and helps your neighbors trying to make a living. You can create a power point slide for each room or you can create an image board on paper.

Color Schemes Monochromatic: One color Analogous: Neighbor colors Complementary: Across the circle Accented neutrals: Neutrals are whites, tans, greys, and blacks. You accent them with a bright color.

Principles of Design Balance: How things relate to each other. Think big and small, tall and short. Proportion: How things fit together. Think baggy and tight. Emphasis: What is most important and what you notice first. Rhythm: How things are repeated and how things flow.

Balance Formal Balance: Equal Informal balance: Not equal

Proportion Bad proportion Good proportion

Emphasis Focus on one thing

Rhythm Repetition Gradation: Light to Dark Alteration

Presentation Finally you will present your work. You really want to sell what you did so explain why you chose your house and why it works for your family. Sell your design. Why is your house unique and why should everyone want to live there. Explain your floorplan and why it works for the modern person, while saving our precious resources. Finally, show your three rooms. This is really your chance to impress the potential buyers while showing your style.

One thing you love and one thing you might change next time. Task List Task Date Completed One thing you love and one thing you might change next time. Choose your environment and complete your research. Choose your house style and write why. Create your floorplan. Make sure to take the needs of your family into consideration. Design three rooms. Reflect color schemes and principles of design you learned. Present your work persuasively, making sure you also give the information potential buyers need to make their big decision.
