Graphing in Science. Types of Charts  Most scientific graphs are made as line graphs.  However, occasionally bar graphs, pie charts, or scatter plots.
Graphs in Science You Can Do It!!!.
Aim: How do scientists interpret data (Part 3)? Do Now: Copy the following: Line Graph - A graph that is used to display data that shows how one variable.
Header (unit) 1) Vertical. Your data table should have columns at the top and the data should be underneath the columns. The data table should not be horizontal.

Graphing Data: Information Data Table: a way to organize data in columns so it is neat and readable Title: a brief way to describe the content of a book,
Notes: Graphing. Purpose of graphing 1.Allows us to compare data easily 2.Creates a “picture” of the data that shows us tendencies or trends 3.Allows.
PowerPoint Tutorial.  Once the data collected portion of an experiment is completed, the work of determining the relationship between the variables begins.

Presentation transcript:

Wake-up An experiment was conducted to find out if different temperatures affect the respiration (breathing) rate of goldfish. Identify the independent variable Identify the dependent variable List 2 controls

Wake-up An experiment was conducted to find out how effective different soaps are at killing bacteria. Identify the independent variable Identify the dependent variable List 2 controls

Wake-up List five pieces of lab equipment in the picture. What are three pieces of lab equipment that can be used to measure volume?

Graphing Christopherson

List three “things” that you know about graphs

What are some different types of graphs What are some different types of graphs? Explain the difference between each.

What is a Graph? A diagram showing the relationship between (typically) two variables, each measured along a pair of axes (x and y)

How to Graph???

a. Identify the Variables Dependent - What is measured Independent – What is varied/changed pH of Water Number of Tadpoles Dependent: Number of Tadpoles Independent: pH of Water

b. Label axis The dependent variable goes on the y-axis The independent variable goes on the x-axis

Number of Tadpoles pH of Water

c. Determine the axis scale Spread the graph out to the MOST available space. Take up ALL the graph paper. You don’t ALWAYS have to start from zero. Find the lowest value and go down a bit.

d. Plot data points pH of Water # of Tadpoles 8.0 45 7.5 69 7.0 78 6.5 88 6.0 43 5.5 23

e. Connect the data points using a ruler

f. Title the graph

*Fish Respiration and Temperature
