Our goal is continuous improvement … “Assess & Progress”

STAAR State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness

STAAR Overview STAAR is the state’s student testing program. The STAAR is more rigorous than previous state tests. STAAR focuses more deeply on content taught during the current year (grade level TEKS), rather than testing knowledge and skills learned over multiple years. The STAAR test has a time limit of 4 hours.

Remember our goal is continuous improvement & student GROWTH… “Assess & Progress”

“Readiness Standards” STAAR assessments have been designed to focus on “readiness” standards. Are essential for success in the current grade level Are important for preparedness for the next grade level Support college and career readiness Address broad and deep concepts, skills, and ideas

“Supporting Standards” May be introduced in the current grade level & emphasized in a subsequent year May be emphasized in a previous year & reinforced in the current grade level May play a role in preparing students for the next grade level but not a central role May address more narrowly defined ideas

Example of Readiness vs. Supporting

Readiness vs. Supporting Standards on STAAR

Where do I find the assessed curriculum? Posted on the TEA Student Assessment Website at www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/

“Blueprints” Identify the design of each assessment. Blueprints categorize: the number of Reporting Categories, the total number of questions and, Readiness and Supporting Standards under a given Reporting Category

Readiness vs. Supporting Standards http://lead4ward.com/resources/

College & Career Readiness College and career readiness begins in Kindergarten Teachers prepare students for college and careers by: Providing rigorous instruction Ensuring that students are reading on grade level and are prepared for the next grade level Ensuring that students can use critical thinking skills

Process Skills STAAR addresses skills in a deeper manner. Process skills in science and mathematics are assessed within context, not isolation, which allows for a more integrated assessment of these content areas. Assessing Process Skills Information can be found at: www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/

How will STAAR be scored & reported? Current student performance will fall into one of three categories… Level I Unsatisfactory Level II Satisfactory Level III Advanced Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Students who meet this standard are at risk of not be sufficiently prepared for the next grade level. Satisfactory Academic Performance Students who meet this standard are on track to be sufficiently prepared for the next grade level. Advanced Academic Performance Student who meet this standard are on track to be well prepared for the next grade level.

Proposed Commissioner Rule revising STAAR Performance Standards…. Did Not Meet Grade Level Approaches Grade Level Meets Masters Indicates that students are unlikely to succeed in the next grade level w/o significant, ongoing academic intervention. Students do not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge & skills. Students are likely to succeed in the next grade level w/ targeted academic intervention. Students generally demonstrate the ability to apply the assessed knowledge & skills in familiar contexts. Students have a high likelihood of success in the next grade level but may still need some short-term, targeted academic intervention. Students generally demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge & skills in familiar contexts. Students are expected to succeed in the next grade level w/ little or no academic intervention. Students demonstrate the ability to think critically & apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar & unfamiliar.

Performance Standards What do the performance standards levels tell us about students? The type of academic intervention or enrichment students need Degree to which students are prepared for the next grade Ability to think critically

Benefits of Assessments… Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, & curriculum. Assessment inspires us to ask these hard questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?“ "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?“ "Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby promoting better learning?“ “Why Is Assessment Important?” July 15, 2008 / Edutopia

Grit …we are trying to prepare our Griffins for the “race”.
