Persuasive essays Persuasive essays promote one perspective throughout in order to persuade the reader of the validity of the writer’s point of view. Each paragraph in the body of the essay introduces and supports an argument that, in turn, supports the essay title. Persuasive essays never make any reference to contrasting perspectives.

Persuasive essay title Students in the UK should take the opportunity to study abroad

Read the sentences below A university education is advantageous when looking for employment. The cost of university in the UK is prohibitive. Young people are choosing to study in other European countries. What is wrong with them?

These claims cannot be defended. They require modification to attenuate the certainty they propose. Revise p. 35-38 Modality and Hedges

Now compare 1. A university education is advantageous when looking for employment. A university education is still widely considerd to be advantageous when looking for employment. 2. The cost of university in the UK is prohibitive. For many, the cost of university in the UK is prohibitive. 3. Young people are choosing to study in other European countries. An increasing number of young people are choosing to study in other European countries.

Example introduction A university education and subsequent degree is still widely considered to be advantageous when looking for employment. However, with UK fees now at £9,000 the cost for many is prohibitive. Consequently, an increasing number of young people are choosing to study in other European countries where, amongst other factors, fees are lower. This essay will examine the opportunities studying abroad can provide. (62 words)

Example paragraph on fees (70 words) The rise in fees is the main reason that many British school leavers are now considering studying abroad. In fact, in some parts of the UK a year’s tuition alone costs £9,000. This compares very unfavourably to other European countries where the average annual tuition fees are under £1,700. Furthermore, in a number of EU states such as Denmark, universities are free. Consequently, interest in foreign degree courses is increasing.

Writing the conclusion Begin with a connector such as In conclusion / To sum up / In the final analysis Summarise main ideas Suggest implications, a possible solution, recommendations Do not include personal opinion NEVER add new ideas or new information.

Writing the conclusion Persuasive essay in favour of studying abroad Title: Students in the UK should take the opportunity to study abroad 3 points: cost language employment Now write the conclusion (70 words) You have twenty minutes

Example conclusion (74 words) In conclusion, three key reasons explain the attraction of studying abroad for British students. Much cheaper tuition is an important incentive and the fact that many degree courses are taught in English means there is no language barrier. Lastly, a large number of prospective students believe that such an opportunity will also lead to greater job prospects once they graduate. The impact this phenomenon will have on the UK, however, remains to be seen.

Persuasive Essay Checklist Title: worked on vocab? Brainstorming: got ideas and organised? Introduction: is it general to specific? Does it indicate the points that will be developed? Is there a statement of purpose? Body:is there a topic sentence and supporting evidence in each paragraph? Are there three clear paragraphs? Conclusion: reiteration of key points, no new info.
