Presentation transcript:

Smoking should be banned from all public places. Writing to Argue Starter: Record the title and the date. Make a chart in your books like the one below. List three reasons FOR and three AGAINST the statement. . Smoking should be banned from all public places. Agree Disagree Smoking kills - It’s a person’s choice

Learning Objective To be able to use the WELLA structure for an argument To be able to use causal connectives in an argument Success Criteria Identify the three-step structure in your partner’s writing Plenary What does writing to argue have to do with John Travolta?

Writing to Argue The following words are causal connectives. This means they make a link between cause and effect. Can you think of any more? Because of this… Therefore… Consequently…

Causal Connective It was raining. Someone broke in to a house School uniform is unattractive. Exams are an unfair way of testing. Vegetables are good for you . It should be banned. You should eat 5 portions a day Another way should be found. The man put up his umbrella The dog barked loudly. Causal Connective

Writing to Argue Use WELLA! How can we structure an argument effectively? W What’s the reason? E Expand with evidence LLA Logical Link to the Argument

Should animals be kept in captivity? Writing to Argue The Big Question: Should animals be kept in captivity? Here is a collection of headlines about animals that are kept in captivity. Zoo Tragedy: Elephant drowns in flood. RSPCA investigates circus animals. Zoo breeding programme saves lives. Chirpy Chimps – zoo wins top award Panda Babies Born Write an article for a teenage magazine arguing for or against this question.

Writing to Argue The Big Question: Should animals be kept in captivity? 1. Decide on your view. Yes, they should be kept in captivity No, animals should be left in the wild

Writing to Argue Think of three reasons for your point of view. Use the planning frame to prepare three paragraphs Make a PLAN! W What’s the reason? E Expand with evidence LLA Logical Link to the Argument

Writing to Argue This is easy! W E LLA Now, choose one of your planned paragraphs and write it out in your exercise book. This is easy! W What’s the reason? E Expand with evidence LLA Logical Link to the Argument

Writing to Argue I love arguing! Like this… One reason that unhealthy food should be banned is that people develop health problems from an early age. 75% of all children who regularly eat McDonalds experience health problems in later life. These include a wide range of often fatal illnesses such as liver, heart and kidney disease caused by eating too much saturated fat. Sugar is also a problem and over 25% of children who eat junk food more than three times a week develop diabetes later in life. Made-up statistical evidence! Clearly, banning junk food will cut disease rates and create a healthier nation for the future. Cause and effect word!

Writing to Argue Swap books with a partner. How successful are you…? Swap books with a partner. Annotate each stage of WELLA in their paragraphs. Underline all their causal connectives. Set yourself one target to improve your argumentative writing. It could be to do with today’s learning – or something different

Writing to Argue Plenary: And finally… What does this have to do with John Travolta?
