Objectives: What is the definition of culture and co-culture? What are the factors and characteristics that affect business communication? What are the intercultural differences that affect business communication? What are the hidden dimensions of culture? What are the guidelines for communicating ethically, through diversity, and organizationally?

A few things to remember and know… Hispanic and Asian populations are growing By 2050-60, it is estimated non-Hispanic whites will be in the minority There are more than 10,000 foreign companies operating in the US Immigrants account for more than half the labor force growth (15%) Understanding Diversity allows us to compete effectively in the global marketplace

The Nature of Culture Culture- a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, and norms that affect the behaviors of a relatively large group of people Cultures are invisible to the people used to inhabiting them. Co-cultures- groups that have a clear identity within the majority culture (race/ ethnicity/ social class/ gender/ generation/ and affiliations)
