EQ: How is culture part of your life? Culture – the set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by a group of people. Can also refer to the people of a certain culture. For example: regional, religion, national, ethnic, etc. Ethnic Group – a group of people with a common racial, national, tribal, religious, or cultural background.
Minority and Majority HG 19 Majority is the larger group contained in a society. In the United States, the majority is the white Anglo-Saxon group. *Most cultures have clearly defined roles for their members. Minority the smaller groups in a country or society. In the United States, the minority groups are Hispanic Americans and African Americans.
Language HG 20 Language is a powerful form of communication. People use language to communicate information, experience, and pass on cultural beliefs and traditions. Thousands of different languages are spoken in the world. Some languages have become world languages, or languages that are commonly spoken in many parts of the world such as English, Spanish, and French. A dialect is a form of a larger language that has its own regional differences. “y’all” in the south.

Religion HG 21 Religion is a central part of many cultures. It affects social life and customs as well as the arts and literature. Religion shapes the way societies and individuals see the world. Religion also establishes the foundations of peoples lives.

Customs HG 22 An important outward display of culture is customs. The world’s many cultures have countless fascinating customs. Some are used formally, and others are viewed as good manners as well as respectful, professional behavior.
HG 23 History shapes how we view the world. We celebrate holidays to honor the heroes and heroines who brought about success. Heroes – reveal the personal characteristics society views as important. Dark periods – disaster and defeat also influence how a society sees itself. Cultural Holidays – important events related to culture that celebrate heritage. EQ: In the United States, what holidays are celebrated that honor heroes and heroines? What type of celebrations take place on these holidays?
Arts and Sports HG 24 Dance, music, visual arts, literature, and other forms of art are all important to culture. Singing and dancing are important parts of religious ceremonies, cultural events, and cultural traditions. Art is a form of personal expression or worship, entertainment, or a way of retelling and preserving a cultures history.
Sports Sports are activities that are adopted, modified and shared. Soccer is played in Japan, China, Greece and even Ancient Rome. The Maya played a similar game and developed the first organized sport.

Makes people more understanding and accepting of other cultures Spreads ideas and innovations Technology has made communication faster and easier Travel has become faster and easier. People can visit more places in less time. Cultural blending is now happening on wider scale than ever before.
