Co-op Model

PET/PTNX/PETX Historical Statistical Overview

Current Recruitment #’s PET – 9 eligible (9 previously secured co-op in 2017S) PETX – 3 eligible

Co-op Eligibility Co-op Eligibility for the Winter recruitment has been determined and those individuals who (according to my records) have not met the criteria have been emailed. If you received an email and feel this is in error, you need to see me personally immediately to seek a fix. I will not deal with this issue via email nor telephone.

Co-op Policy & Procedure IMPORTANT! Familiarize yourself with the Co-op Policy and Procedures. LINK TO CO-OP POLICY LINK TO CO-OP PROCEDURES

CO-OP PROCEDURES Did you know… Verbal acceptance of a co-op is binding? Reneging on a co-op with an employer is grounds to fail your co-op immediately? You should read this document to find out more about this and many more important facts. LINK TO CO-OP PROCEDURES

Steam Plant List You will need to reference this list in order to complete the Survey of Intent (see next slide) htpps://www.mylambton.ca/myCareer/students/workshops/

Mandatory Online PET SURVEY OF INTENT This survey MUST be completed by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18: THE LINK TO THE SURVEY HAS BEEN EMAILED TO YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL ACCOUNT.

PURPOSE OF THE Online Survey of Intent The Survey of Intent gives Justin Gingerich (Job Developer) & Patti Helps (Co-op Advisor) a snapshot into the dynamics of the individuals in this recruitment. Things like: How many intend to do a co-op this winter? Where are people at with their 4th Class Exams? Willingness to go out of town? Willingness to do a volunteer co-op for steam time? Where geographically are people targeting? Reminder of how this process unfolds!

PURPOSE OF THE Online Survey of Intent What it ISN’T: It is NOT the beginning & end of YOUR job search efforts What is IS: It is the beginning of you refining what your ideal preferences are but there are no guarantees that you will be able to secure a co-op there; you may have to reassess as you go along and expand your search Collectively the information we gather from ALL of the survey’s gives our job developer a geographical idea of where to target his efforts outside of Sarnia/Lambton; London & Windsor.

YOUR Next Steps… Complete the online Survey of Intent by Monday, September 18 (Link to survey has been emailed to your personal email account) Have your own personal weekly action plan of what plants you plan to reach out to personally. Do NOT connect with any employers in the Sarnia/Lambton; London or Windsor areas until you have talked with Justin Gingerich first. IMPORTANT: It is VITAL that all student job searches be done in consultation with Justin Gingerich to avoid multiple students reaching out to the same employers and angering them. Make a weekly list of companies you plan on reaching out to each week. BEFORE CONTACTING ANYONE, drop by and briefly speak to Justin in order to co-ordinate the effort. He may have already spoken to the chief there…he may have some inside information that will help you. He may know that that company is not taking anyone this term so don’t waste your time/energy etc.

YOUR Next Steps… As you contact companies, stay connected with Justin so that you both can work in tandem. Keep adjusting your strategy and expanding your search area while working with Justin Verbal acceptances are binding! Once you have accepted a co-op (verbally, via email, with paperwork etc.) your recruitment is over. Reneging on a co-op is terms for immediately failing your co-op. Please familiarize yourself fully with the co-op policies and procedures found here: https://www.mylambton.ca/mycareer/students/Policies_And_Procedures/ If you secure a co-op, you must come and see Patti Helps within 24 hours to complete the appropriate paperwork Work Place Insurance and Liability Insurance is available through the college if you secure a volunteer co-op. Proper paperwork must be done within 24 hours of acceptance through Patti Helps

IMPORTANT! Any co-op you consider MUST provide 3 months qualifying steam time. If it does not, it cannot be approved.

3. Social Media FACEBOOK: Most companies have Facebook pages that you can follow! LinkedIn: How to Use LinkedIn to Find a Job Create a Profile. Here are tips for creating a profile on LinkedIn. Consider a Photo. You can add a photo (a headshot is recommended) to your LinkedIn profile. Keywords and Skills. Include all your resume keywords and skills in your profile, so your profile will be found. Build Your Network. Connect with other members and build your network. The more connections you have, the more opportunities you Search Jobs. Use the job search section to find job listings. Join Relevant GROUPS…(like Institute of Power Engineers!)

4. BROADEN your SEARCH to INCREASE your ODDS If you are only concentrating on SARNIA, you must realize that the odds of employment in your field will be greatly limited, and there is a high probability you will not be successful

5. Steam Time Issues – VOLUNTEER??? This sluggish economy may require short term sacrifice for long term gain... For the right position, consider volunteering at a company Gets you excellent exposure to a company and demonstrates initiative and commitment to your chosen profession Essential for you to become a 4th Class PE before you enter your fourth academic term (in order to get the 11 months 3rd class steam time reduction) Could lead to future career opportunities if you perform well. A chief is well connected…impress him and it could open doors for years to come; Screw up…it could haunt you for years to come. Lambton College can provide WSIB insurance coverage & liability insurance for unpaid work terms with Ontario employers.

Financial Assistance for Volunteer DOMESTIC students: If you are on OSAP and you secure a volunteer co-op, speak to Carrie Caldwell in the Registrar’s Office regarding funding options. There is a “Study Period Extension Form – Volunteer Co-op” form that you need to complete.

Minimum Plant Size Code for Qualifying Steam Time

Reality Check! YOU are responsible to secure your own co-op! Justin Gingerich (Job Developer) & Patti Helps are here to help but you need to be actively networking and seeking opportunities weekly until you have secured something We have maintained a 100% success rate in students securing co-op in the PETC program (between the two opportunities); HOWEVER, it is important to note that approximately 80-90% of the PETC co-ops are volunteer and outside of the Sarnia/Lambton area In order to acquire the 11 months 3rd Class steam time reduction &/or to write the 3rd class exams, the TSSA has said that you must be a CERTIFIED 4TH CLASS POWER ENGINEER by the time you BEGIN your 4th academic term! You cannot become a certified 4th Class Power Engineer without the additional 3 months industry steam time therefore co-op is essential. You must do whatever you have to do to secure that steam time!!!

Reality Check! Be aware of your competition All Power Engineering programs across Ontario are searching for the same steam time opportunities as you. You need to beat them to the opportunity! DO NOT DELAY! With the decrease in the price of the barrel of oil, CPET opportunities are scarce. Soon they will be trying to get a volunteer steam time opportunity. You need to secure yours before they flood the market.
