Deluged Texas Braces for More Rain and Years of Recovery Julie Turkewitz; Richard Perez-Pena; Jack Healy Houston August 28, 2017 Chris Warner

What if….? What would you bring with you from your house if you had to evacuate it due to a natural disaster, not knowing if you’d be able to return to it or if your house would even be there later?

Flooding in Houston Hurricane Harvey struck southeast Texas on Friday. Thousands have been affected by this massive storm.

What Happened? Harvey was a very impactful and powerful tropical storm. It was reclassified as a hurricane. It has since been classified back as a tropical storm. Many people have been displaced. There is fear that oil refineries will fail and that will cause a spike in gas prices.

Who? People affected by Harvey in Houston. Governor Greg Abbot of Texas Federal Emergency Management Agency First responders

What? (I feel like I told enough of the story in the previous slides, so I’m skipping this slide.)

When? Story was published on August 28th. Storm hit on August 26th. Rescues continue today. Recovery will take into the foreseeable future.

Where? Houston, Texas and surrounding areas

Why? Hurricanes are naturally occurring events this time of year. This does seem to be an unusually strong and extreme storm though.

So What? Perhaps we know someone who lives in Texas (like I do). Perhaps we remember Hurricane Katrina and the devastation is caused Uprooting families Massive government intervention.

(Looking for level 3 and 4 questions here!)
