Heat Transfer

What is the instrument that measures temperature? Thermometer Temperature is the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance.

3 Ways Heat is Transferred 1. Radiation: The transfer of heat by waves. Ex. feeling heat from the sun, feeling the heat from a fire

2. Conduction: the transfer of heat by direct physical contact. works well in solids, not liquids and gases Ex. hot sand on the beach, pot handle on stove

3. Convection: transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid Ex. furnace heating the house

Heat transfer in Troposphere All 3 processes heat the troposphere. The sun heats the earth, this heat is transferred back by radiation and conduction. only the first few meters is heated by conduction Why? Convection causes most of the heating in the troposphere.

As air is heated it rises, because it is less dense than surrounding air. As the air rises it begins to cool, this causes it to become more dense and sink. This cycle creates convection currents.

Which type of heat transfer is most responsible for heating the troposphere? Conduction Radiation Convection I don’t know

Which type of heat transfer is most responsible for the sun heating the earth? Conduction Convection Radiation I don’t know

As altitude increases, density __________ Decreases Stays the same I don’t know

As altitude increases in the stratosphere, what happens to temperature? Decreases Stays the same I don’t know
