How is MAgmm and the academic year structured? Semester One (September 2015 to January 2016) Design One (40 credits) Research Skills (20 credits) Semester Two (January 2016 to May 2016) Design Two (40 credits) Option Module of your choice (20 credits) May 2016 to August 2016 Final Project (60 credits)

Timetable There is a usual weekly pattern (printed for you and on Blackboard) There are different seminar/workshop groups (A, B, C, D) – these can be found on Blackboard. Check Blackboard (the weekly folder in Course Content ) for a timetable for that week.

Design One Teaching team: Dan (Module Coordinator), Jeremy, Mihaela, Rohit, and Seth. Lectures with all students on Mondays (First lecture is Monday 28th September at 10.30am in Lecture Theatre A. Arrive by 10.20) Four smaller groups (A, B, C and D) for seminars and workshops on Mondays and Tuesdays There will be list/register for each group and a weekly timetable for each group showing where you should be and when Design One is structured into three parts…

Design One Part One - one week each for ‘Global’, ‘Media’, and ‘Management’. Introduce key concepts that we will explore over the programme. Workshops on digital photography, video, and social networks.

Design One Part Two Guest speakers exploring issues of new media, branding and design, labour and the music industry, and citizenship and politics.

Design One Part three Investigate a specific media technology looking at marketing and branding, technological affordances, and user experience.

Research Skills Teaching team: Rohit (Module Coordinator), Dan, Seth, and Jeremy Lectures with all students on Thursdays (First lecture is Thursday 01 October at 10.00am in West Side Lecture Theatre. Research Skills The research skills we will be building are, by definition, interdisciplinary, i.e. they will involve methods of the following: media and communications sociology anthropology cultural studies

Design Two (semester two; Jan 2016 onwards) We will explore different trends and developments in global media management. Amongst other areas: Transmedia storytelling Content curating Gamification Opportunities for you to explore how these might be applied in different settings (e.g. commercial, political, charitable, non-governmental)

Option Modules (semester two; Jan 2016 onwards) Taught with students on other MA Design pathways. These selections are made later in the year (talks to help you decide): Choose from one of the following: Entrepreneurship Responsible Design 4 Global Marketing Visual Culture Display: Interpreting the Language of Design Digital Cultures Digital Marketing Communications

Digital Cultures The GMM team runs the Digital Culture Option. Teaching team: Rohit (Module Leader), Seth, Dan. We also have professors and staff from other pathways doing occasional lectures. You will learn what digital culture is and you will learn how to contribute to making digital culture.  Cyberculture Digital activism Citizen journalism Video Games Not just technology but how does it work and shape society

Final Project (May 2016 onwards) Bringing it all together into a project that you design and complete! Some projects from 2014-15: Use of Twitter by journalists Wechat moving into international markets Impact of social media on public awareness and fundraising Public and government interactions on Weibo Online drama on YouKu Use of Wiebo by New Weekly Digital media marketing strategies for Samsung Galaxy Use of Twitter for Baltimore Protests Use of Pinterest by fashion professionals Social media and live/mega events Use of social media by K-Pop music fans Cyberbullying Amazon’s review and recommendation system Identity construction in online games User experiences of advertisements on Wechat Curating Facebook profiles for employability Interactions between TV and Weibo (The Voice in China) Comparing representations of women in social media and reality dating shows Gamification Location aware apps and Tripadvisor Chinese social television marketing Business models for Foursquare location based services

Assessments Each module is assessed by two or three assessments. These will be introduced in lectures/ workshops, and there will be lots of time for discussing drafts and feedback. Variety of assessments across modules (reports; literature reviews; proposals; digital presentations; spoken presentations; group projects; media making; research project).

English for Academic Purposes A vital opportunity for you to develop your academic research and writing skills at postgraduate level. Led by Belinda. Three groups on Tuesday afternoons in Rotunda.
