Steps to understanding graphs (Bar Graph, Line graph, Circle graph) Look at the title – underline it Examine the bars, lines, or legend Look at the vertical and horizontal axis Horizontal runs at the bottom of the graph Vertical runs along the left-hand side of the graph Before you answer the questions you need to be able to explain the importance of the graph.

Bar Graph 1. What was the population of Africa in 1650? A- Less than 25 million B- 50 million C- 100 million D- 250 million 2. Which statement is supported by the information in the graph? A- There was little difference in population size between these regions. B- Asia was the least populated. C- Africa’s population was larger than Europe’s population. Steps to Understanding Maps 1. Look at the title – underline it. 2. Find the legend – Circle it. What does it mean? 3. Check the compass rose 4. View the scale – make note of the measurements. Example: Miles or Kilometers
