KS4 Curriculum Core Choices Wider Learning

CORE in 2017 (Part 1) Mixed ability teaching groups 2nd World Religion and more source materials Religious Education All students follow English Language and English Literature Sets with smaller intervention group – no tiers of entry English Sets with a smaller intervention group – Foundation or Higher tier - enriched, tougher content and formulae Maths Personalised pathways - triple or combined science Science

Core Subjects in KS4 All MUST take these subjects RE English Language English Literature Maths Combined Science* Biology, Chemistry, Physics^ Total = 6 or 7 GCSEs Depending on the pathway, Science GCSEs count either 2 or 3 grades * Combined Science will be a ‘double grade’ and will likely to be taken by some of T Band and all of V band ^ The single Sciences are accessible to T1 & T2 and some of T3

EBACC in 2017 (Part 2) All students select either Language but NOT all will follow Languages at school’s discretion ( *we will contact parents where BTEC pathway is advisable) Overseas visits are NOT part of the GCSE course French or Spanish or BTEC* Field Trip and data gather activities are integral to assessment and MUST be attended (Calshot, local area surveys, Isle of Wight) Geography Any overseas visits are NOT part of GCSE course (USA, Berlin, or Auschwitz) History

EBACC subjects ALL must take ONE of these Most will take ONE of these History Or Geography Total = 1 GCSE French Or Spanish Total = 1 GCSE

BTEC Pathway BTEC Sport BTEC Travel and Tourism BTEC Art *Selected non-MFL do ONE from BTEC Sport BTEC Travel and Tourism BTEC Art BTEC ICT & Creative Technologies Total = 1 GCSE equivalent* *Selected non-MFL students are those the school feel would benefit from an alternative, more accessible mode of learning. BTECs offer a more vocational and applied learning context They are included in the Woolf report and are approved GCSE equivalents recognised by colleges and universities

CORE + EBACC Summary BASIC MEASURES English Language English Literature Mathematics RE Total = 4 GCSES SCIENCE Combined or Triple Science Total = 2 or 3 GCSEs HUMANITY Geography or History Total = 1 GCSE LANGUAGES French or Spanish Or BTEC

Choices in 2017 one ONLY - not one from each Arts & Performing Arts Art Drama Music PE Total = 1 GCSE Technology Catering Computer Science Design Technology

Option Subjects ALL must take ONE of these Art* Catering Computing^ Drama Music PE* Technology Total = 1 GCSE equivalent* *Students selected to follow BTECs may NOT choose both Art or PE/Sport options ^Computing tends to be taken by students in T1-T3 - the complexity of the coding and competency in Maths can make this choice harder to access for students who have weaker skills in Maths

KS4 Curriculum Updates New GCSEs began in vast majority of subjects 2016-7* New grading – 1-9 in all subjects for 1st time in 2018* Linear Model – means end of course exams and need for familiarity and organisation from Day 1 English Baccalaureate (EBACC) remains ‘common currency’ and ‘gold standard’
