Defining Civility The American Heritage Dictionary Defines Civility as: Politeness or Courtesy. A courteous act or utterance. 3

Defining Uncivil The American Heritage Dictionary Defines Uncivil as: Impolite, discourteous, rude, barbarous. 4

Do you see Civility or Incivility? Do you see Civility in the workplace? Do you see Civility in politics? Do you see Civility in your community? Do you see Civility in schools? Do you see Civility among governments? Do you see Civility in your Masonic Lodge?

“The journey begins with each of us.” MASONIC CIVILITY EFFORT In 2014, Masonic Leaders across North America joined forces to address the need to improve civility in society. Much progress has been made since the initial meetings and it continues with the use of the Grand Lodge of Oregon’s Sococo Internet Conferencing System. This training is the first step in bringing the Civility Program to the craft in Oregon. 6

Our Goal To try to improve civility in all aspects of our world. This is not a simple task or one which will be accomplished in a short time, or by a select few. It is a task which must become a way of life for each of us. 8

How can we improve civility? Establish a Grand Lodge Civility Program. Create Civility Ambassadors in each Masonic Lodge. Include Civility Training in our Lodge Programs. Live a Civil Lifestyle. 14

OUR ROLE AS MASONS DELIVERY SYSTEM MASONIC HERITAGE CULTURAL SENSITIVITY Our lodges and worldwide presence provide an intriguing system to deliver programs and information. Masons have a long history of fostering civil dialogue and building civil societies. Masons are diverse and our lodges represent people of different: Places of origin Language Races Disability Other 15

STEPS WE’VE TAKEN WHAT WE HAVE DONE NATIONAL CIVILITY CENTER MASONIC CIVILITY TASK FORCE The task force consists of 4 dozen participants from 17 Grand Lodges 6 of the 12 board positions for the National Civility Center are filled by Masons A Civility Toolbox has been created CIVILITY TOOLBOX AMBASSADORS ARE BEING DEPLOYED 16
