Career Portfolio Leadership Development seminar

Career Portfolio A career portfolio is a visual representation of your abilities, skills, capabilities, knowledge, qualities - and it represents your potential. Physically, it's a collection of things - tangible materials - that represent work-related events in your life. (But, always remember that you may have developed skills that are now work-related while you were playing team sports, while pursuing hobbies or volunteer activities, or simply pursuing your interests.)

e-Portfolio An ePortfolio (electronic portfolio) is an electronic collection of evidence that shows your learning journey over time.

Career Portfolio Benefits A portfolio can promote three important skills: self-awareness, self-assessment, and communication that can help in both career planning and job searches. It helps you see connections between your interests and abilities. It enables you to reflect on the important aspects of your life so that you have a better focus and can make better career decisions. It demonstrates how much you’ve invested in your career preparation to an employer. Writing your resume and filling out applications is a lot easier since all of the material is organized and at your fingertips. Your career portfolio and the work you put into it becomes your historical career log.

Suggested Portfolio Contents Your resume. Copy of your high school, college/university transcripts. Evidence of any licenses, credentials or professional certifications you hold. Job descriptions from positions you have held (including internships and volunteer work). Certificates of awards and honors. Records of formal training, (e.g., CPR training, professional certification) including names of presenters, time commitment, new knowledge gained, skills learned, competency level, etc. Letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, or supervisors. Unsolicited recommendation letters, or memos thanking you for outstanding work. Short examples of your academic work (omit instructor’s grade and/or comments). A list of conferences and workshops you have attended, including names of presenters, time commitment, new knowledge gained, skills learned, competency level, etc. Performance evaluations from jobs, internships or volunteer experiences.
