Chapter 5 Questions What was Annemarie told about the death of her older sister Lise? Annemarie was told that her sister, Lise, was killed in an accident when she was hit by a car. Why did the German soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment looking for the Rosen’s? The German soldiers came to the Johansen’s apartment looking for the Rosen’s because the Rosen’s and Johansen’s are good friends. How did Mr. Johansen convince the German soldiers that Ellen was not a Jewish girl hiding? Mr. Johansen convinced the German soldiers that Ellen wasn’t a Jewish girl hiding by showing them a picture of Lise as a baby when she had dark hair.

Ch. 5 Questions Continued How did the German soldiers show a lack of respect for the Johansens? The German soldiers showed a lack of respect for the Johansens by speaking loudly even though Mrs. Johansen asked them to speak softer. They also showed disrespect by pulling on Ellen’s hair, knocking items off hooks, tore the baby pictures and stepped on them. Why was it important that Ellen remove her Star of David necklace? It was important for Ellen to remove her Star of David necklack so that the Germans would not be able to identify her as Jewish. Why had Mr. and Mrs. Johansen not looked at Lise’s things since the accident? Mr. and Mrs. Johansen had not looked at Lise’s things since the accident because they were sad.

Ch. 6 – Is the Weather Good for Fishing VOCABULARY tentatively (p.50) – hesitant, uncertain  distorted (p.55) – to twist out of its normal shape  exasperation (p.57) – extreme annoyance

Chapter 6 Questions Why were the girls kept home from school after the visit by the German soldiers? The girls were kept home from school after the visit by the German soldiers because the soldiers might look for Jewish children at the school. What made Annemarie realize that her father was speaking in code to her uncle? What was their conversation really about? Annemarie realized that her father was speaking in code to her uncle because her father was talking about bringing cigarettes to her uncle, and cigarettes had not been available for quite awhile. Their conversation was really about taking Ellen to Henrik’s house. Where did Mrs. Johansen, Annemarie, Kirsti, and Ellen travel? Why didn’t Mr. Johansen go with them? Mrs. Johansen and the girls are traveling to Gilleleje, where Mrs. Johansen’s brother, Henrik, lives. Mr. Johansen doesn’t go with so that the German soldiers do not get suspicious. Mr. Johansen needs to be seen going about his normal schedule. Why was Annemarie worried when the soldiers questioned them on the train? When the soldiers questions them on the train Annemarie was worried that Kirsti would tell the soldiers that it was Ellen’s New Year, and that would tell the soldiers that Ellen was Jewish.

Ch. 7 – The House by the Sea VOCABULARY awe (p.60) - a feeling of mixed fear, respect, and wonder  hazy (p.62) - partly hidden or vague  appliqued (p.65) - to apply a cut out decoration to a larger surface

Ch. 7 Questions What did Annemarie do with Ellen’s necklace? Annemarie hid Ellen’s necklace in a safe and secret place where no one would find it. Annemarie said she would keep it there for Ellen until it was safe for her to wear it again. Why did Mrs. Johansen ask the girls if they saw anyone while playing near the shore? Mrs. Johansen asked the girls if they saw anyone while playing near the shore because it is too dangerous to explain who Ellen is. It is too dangerous to explain who Ellen is, because there are German soldiers everywhere and they are looking for Jewish people. Why do you think there was no laughing between Mrs. Johansen and her brother as they sat down to talk? There was no laughter between Mrs. Johansen and Henrik because it was a serious time, and the visit was not a visit for fun.

Gilleleje during World War II

Ch. 8 – There Has Been a Death VOCABULARY relocate (p.68) – to move to a new location mock (p.71) – to make fun of dismay (p.71) – upset

Ch. 8 Questions Why was Annemarie surprised by Uncle Henrik’s announcement that there was to be a funeral? Annemarie was surprised by Uncle Henrik’s announcement that there was to be a funeral because she had never heard of Great Aunt Birte. Annemarie was also surprised because no one had called Copenhagen with the news, and no one seemed to be sad. What did Uncle Henrik mean when he said, “Tomorrow will be a good day for fishing”? When Uncle Henrik said, “Tomorrow will be a good day for fishing” he meant that they might be moving Ellen to a safer place. NOTE: The last time this phrase was used was in Ch. 6 by Papa when he was using code to tell Henrik that Mama and the girls were bringing Ellen up to Gilleleje. What comments and explanations from adults seem mysterious and strange to Annemarie? The comments and explanations from adults that seem mysterious and strange to Annemarie are when Henrik said that the weather was good for fishing, talking about Great-Aunt Birte’s funeral, and that Mama had cleaned the living room and moved the furniture in there.

deftly (p.75) - quick and skillful in action Ch. 9 – Why Are You Lying? VOCABULARY deftly (p.75) - quick and skillful in action hearse (p.77) - a vehicle for carrying the dead to the grave mourning (p.77) - to feel or show grief or sorrow especially over someone's death reluctantly (p.78) - showing doubt or unwillingness

Ch. 9 - Questions What did Annemarie learn about Aunt Birte? Annemarie learned that Aunt Birte isn’t real. What does Annemarie learn about bravery in her talk with Uncle Henrik? In her talk with Uncle Henrik, Annemarie learned that it’s easier to be brave if you don’t know everything. Why didn’t Annemarie tell Ellen the truth about Aunt Birte? Annemarie didn’t tell Ellen the truth about Aunt Birte to protect Ellen the same way Annemarie’s mother protected her. Who do you think the people arriving for the funeral really are? I think the people arriving for the funeral are Jewish people trying to escape the Nazis. I think this because earlier in the book Papa uses a code of cigarettes for Jewish people, and tells Henrik that there are a lot of Jewish people in Copenhagen, but that they’re only bring one “carton of cigarettes” – meaning one Jewish person. Why do you think Mrs. Johansen and Uncle Henrik created the “death of an Aunt Birte”? I think that Mrs. Johansen and Uncle Henrik created “the death of an Aunt Birte” to get the Jewish people together so that the German soldiers would not be suspicious. Ch. 9 - Questions
