Past military installations Utah has several different military installations that are no longer in use or have been absorbed into a larger military installations. These are just a few – Wendover Air Base Ogden Defense Depot Fort Douglas Camp Floyd Fort Duchesne Kearns Army Air Base

Wendover air base Established in 1941 for use as a bombing range during WWII During WWII Wendover was the Air Force’s largest bombing and gunnery range This was the training site for the planes that carried the atomic bombs to Hiroshima and Nagasaki Closed in 1957

Ogden defense depot Established in 1941 The Defense Depot was used as logistical supply and administrative support for military installations The mission included the receipt, storage, maintenance, inventory and issue of items that included food, clothing, textiles, packages, petroleum products etc. During World War II, the Ogden Defense Depot was also used as an internment camp for both German and Italian prisoners of war Handed over to HAFB in 1997

Fort douglas Established in October 1862 as a small military garrison for the purpose of protecting the mail route and telegraph lines along the Central Overland Route In 1878, it was officially named Fort Douglas The fort was officially closed in 1991, and most of the buildings were turned over to the University of Utah A small section of the original fort is used by the Army Reserve and includes the Fort Douglas Military Museum

Current military installations Dugway Proving Ground Tooele Army Depot Hill Air Force Base Utah Test and Training Range Deseret Chemical Depot

Dugway proving ground Established in 1943 in Tooele County Dugway is used to test biological and chemical weapon defense systems in a secure and isolated environment DPG also serves as a facility for US Army Reserve and US National Guard maneuver training, and US Air Force flight tests–mostly from nearby Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield The area has also been used by Army special forces for training in preparation for deployments to the War in Afghanistan

Tooele army depot Established in 1942 in Tooele County It serves as a storage site for war reserve and training ammunition The depot stores, issues, receives, renovates, modifies, maintains and demilitarizes conventional munitions

Hill air force base Officially opened in November 1940 as Ogden Air Depot After the U.S. entered WWII HAFB became an major maintenance and supply base for the Air Force, with round the clock operations During WWII the base repaired and returned thousands of planes to service Officially changed to Hill Air Force Base in 1948

Current military installations Dugway Proving Ground Tooele Army Depot Hill Air Force Base Which one do you think is the biggest? Hill Air Force Base is the biggest Which county is it in? DAVIS County

What are some benefits to the Utah economy? Military personnel working in these military installations spend money in the local communities, which supports local economies Money being spent is always good for an economy Military installations provide jobs to civilians too, not just military personnel Remember – jobs are essential to a healthy economy Businesses open near the military installation in order to serve the needs of the installation Businesses = jobs = more money to spend = a healthy economy

How do military installations Affect the surrounding societies and cultures? Military personnel regularly get transferred which creates a mobile population in the surrounding areas Diversity is increased in the surrounding communities because the military population is diverse Usually, local schools offer courses tailored for military-minded students Noise levels increase due to training exercises (jets flying overhead)
