Mixed With Faith Hebrews 4:2

Why are there those who are zealous for the Lord and those who are not? Why do some want to learn about God’s word and some do not? Why do some give as they have been prospered and some do not? Why do some volunteer to help and some fight it tooth and nail? Why do some persevere despite difficulties and some quit so easily?

The Text Heb. 3:15-4:11; cf. Psa. 95:7-11 Concerns Israel in the Old Testament Application also in the New Testament Hebrews 4:2 is the key to success

God Believe Him Obey Him Rest New Testament Old Testament

Hebrews 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.

Do not harden your heart God Believe Him Obey Him Rest New Testament Old Testament Mixed with faith Do not harden your heart

Mixing With Faith What is to be mixed with faith? Hebrews 4:2 says “the word” This is whatever word was preached (OT/NT) All hear it. Some do not profit and some do profit Difference? - - the word is/isn’t mixed with personal faith

Word produces faith “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17) Parable of the sower (Lk. 8) Seed is the word of God (8:11) Seed (word) sown in hearts (8:12, 15) “Keep it and bear fruit with patience [endurance/steadfastness/perseverance]”

Commendation of Thessalonians “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thess. 2:13) “Your faith grows exceedingly” (2 Thess. 1:3) “Our testimony among you was believed” (2 Thess. 1:10)

Practically Speaking There is no magic in the gospel There are real/unreal expectations Limitations do exist What cannot/can be known Cannot know the thought and intents of another (1 Cor. 2:11) Can see interest (Acts 10:24, 27, 33) Can know fruit (Matt. 7:20)

It only works if there is first interest! Paul at Mars Hill (Acts 17:16-24) Obvious implication of interest Matthew 6:33 – “Seek” 2 Timothy 2:15 – “Give diligence” James 1:25 – Looks”; “Continues” Colossians 3:2 – “Set”
