Final Destination Goal: Reach ALL incoming First Year Students Where? How? Historically, our library instruction was scattershot: Some English composition classes, but not all Some beginning speech classes, but not all Some FYSs, but not all Currently, have 900 freshman, 2 reference librarians, and a goal to reach as many as possible with the same basic library instruction. Where: Why not English? ENG composition, also taught in first year, faculty sometimes do their own library instruction, Not ALL freshman take English (AP credit, Transfer credit, dual enrollment) Turned to FYS- ALL incoming students MUST take FYS. How?- limits of 50 minute class. FYS-meet once a week. Don’t have research assignment. Not uniform Campus had just revised the FYS and designated a “library week” – so we knew we had a chance to reach many, if not all students.

What is a flipped classroom? In a flipped classroom, students use technology at home to watch online video lectures, demonstrations, and explanations of assignments so that class time is spent doing more hands-on activities. [read screen] So, given the difficulties we faced, we decided to flip the classroom to (we hoped) maximize our impact Informal poll- Show of hands- who has flipped a class before?

Packing our bags…. Developed custom tutorial videos Created quizzes Placed in ANGEL Our first step was that Katie and our colleague John Shank created a series of customized videos using keywords based on the FYS common reading book: Beautiful Souls : from the chapter on whistleblowers -- about business ethics. Videos taught Lionsearch (Penn State’s version of Summon Discovery Tool) – SHOW VIDEO 3 other videos that show the search process- using keywords, search operators and filtering to narrow the results. Also showed getting full text, and getting MLA or APA citations. Another video that explained Boolean operators; available on YouTube. Created quizzes based on videos- could be tied to faculty grade book in ANGEL- course management system. Allowed faculty to make this mandatory and/or give credit The plan was that the students would watch these BEFORE seeing the librarian in the classroom.

Embarking on our journey… Marketing to faculty. The Thun Librarians invite you to a free hot lunch... to share our new FYS hybrid approach to enable your students to become better, successful learners through the development of good research skills. Wanted to present this new approach of ours to the FYS faculty and attempt to get faculty buy-in which is crucial. Offered FREE FOOD to bring in faculty. Our campus usually gives out sandwiches and wraps Decided on hot food to try and entice more to come. Less than 50% of FYS faculty showed up: Reasons? Timing- beginning of semester, competing meetings. No interest? No other marketing!

Set sail… Fall 2013 semester begins… 12 out of 40 sections reached In-class activity 40 sections with 20 students= 800 first year students total 12 sections of classes taught by librarians= 240 students out of the 800 students Not all flipped- some didn’t use modules because of technical difficulties- In class activity- all over the map. Some faculty wanted primary sources, career research. When there was no assignment, we had a game using LionSearch. Wasn’t uniform like we hoped.

Lost baggage? What went wrong? Faculty survey 2011- 9 sections Refer to stats on screen: Obviously our big push for 2013 didn’t work! What went wrong? Different faculty teach fys each year -- so the normal repeat customer base isn't there Our limited marketing was not effective. Most FYSs are taught in the fall semester, and we conducted a survey of the FYS faculty in the spring semester. Survey is another form of marketing. Makes people aware 26 people logged in begin survey. Only 6 respondents said that they assigned the video modules. BUT all 6 agreed that they were “helpful to their students in the course of their research assignment”. From here, we realized that we were on the right track, but we needed a number of improvements. Especially need faculty buy-in

A new destination… Fall 2014 changes New tutorials New marketing New in-class activity So begins 2014. Summer 2014 we sat down to decide what needed to be updated. Decided on: New tutorials based on site changes New more aggressive marketing- tiered approach Better uniformity in the in-class assignment- all use lionsearch.

Re-Packing… New tutorials Updated quizzes Due to a new revised version of lionsearch: Lionsearch 2.0, needed updated tutorials. Chose to use ones created at University Park- saved time. Didn’t have to re-invent the wheel. Then realized the quizzes didn’t make sense, so they needed to be updated too. Sample Quiz question: True or False. The abstract page is the same as the full text of the article.

Taking off… New marketing Catchy email to FYS faculty Follow-up email Not above bribery Follow-up email Top Five Reasons to Flip your library class It's as easy as adding us to your ANGEL page. No work on your part-- We'll even create the library assignment! All FYS students will leave the library with the same skills! More time in class for hands on activities! If you FLIP your class, we will bring TREATS! More aggressive marketing to faculty. Read the email! Email sent in beginning of August 2014- 12 responses in the first 2 weeks- same amount as taught in the WHOLE fall 2013 semester. AND most faculty are not checking email in early August! Follow up email to non respondents in late August, just before start of classes. Thought about doing more, but were overwhelmed with classes. Short staffed- with 1 more librarian, would be more willing to do next step marketing- one to one phone calls, meetings, etc.

Landing… New in-class activity This I Believe excerpt Working through research process All classes use LionSearch Based on this years common reading, this I believe. Began as NPR program in the 50’s, revived the idea in the 21st century and compiled the essays into a book. The subtitle is The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women. We begin the in-class session by playing A shared moment of trust by Warren Christopher from the NPR site. We ask students to Listen for themes and be prepared to share (this is the hardest part!). Then we Think pair share keywords. We present the students with this scenario: You have a research project that must relate to these themes, so you MAY want to relate it to either your major or some interest you have—may have to add another keyword. Start researching to find articles; we ask them to find 1 scholarly journal article and 1 magazine article that are no more than 3 years old. We encourage them to use keywords, search operators and filters to narrow down their results. Then we have the students find the citation button and write a citation in both APA and MLA for practice. Then email themselves a full text of an article, again for practice. Our handout is the worksheet we use for this class, so feel free to use or change as you see fit. But a few classes have own assignments, but we make sure that all use LionSearch.

Final Destination… 37 sections total 25 sections reached Faculty giving positive feedback In fall 2014, Penn State Berks offered 37 sections with 25 students in each. To date: We have been in or been asked to teach in 25 sections. Reaching 600 out of 900 students. 2012 reach 240 out of 800. We feel good! Also getting good feedback from faculty and those who didn’t respond initially are asking for a session because they have been hearing how great our sessions are!
