Module 2 – Lessons 3 & 4 Lesson Topic: Interpreting and Computing Division of a Fraction by a Fraction – More Models Lesson Objectives: I can… Use fraction bars and area models to show the division of fractions by fractions with common denominators Make connections to the multiplication of fractions. I can understand that to get the quotient when dividing fractions, I must ask “how many groups of the divisor are in the dividend?”.

Opening Exercises 1. Draw a model to represent 12 ÷ 3 2. Write at least 3 equivalent fractions for the fraction below 2/3

Example 1: What is 8/9 ÷ 2/9? Take a moment to use what you know about division to create a model to represent this division problem.

Example 2: Molly purchases 1 3/8 cups of strawberries. This can also be represented as 11/8. She eats 2/8 cups per serving. How many servings did Molly purchase? Create a model to find the answer.

Example 3: 3/4 ÷ 2/3 What is this question asking? Why is this question more difficult to model than the previous questions? How do we solve this problem?

Independent Exercise 1: Rewrite the division problem and draw a model to support your answer. 3/4 ÷ 1/4

Independent Exercise 2: Rewrite the division problem and draw a model to support your answer. 9/4 ÷ 3/4

Independent Exercise 3: Solve the following problem with a model and explain your answer 6/2 ÷ 3/4

Independent Exercise 4: Solve the following problem with a model and explain your answer 3/5 ÷ 1/4

Closing What key ideas do you need to know in order to be able to divide fractions by fractions with the same denominator? Fractions with different denominators?

Evaluate your learning: 1 2 3 4 How will you “Sharpen your Saw?”
