What does reading look like in Kindergarten? Children should have 1500 hours of reading on someone’s lap by the time a child enters kindergarten. Will my child learn to read? Children read books in the following ways: Reading the pictures Reading the words Retelling the story Teachers will provide children with “Just Right” books for your child to read at school and at home. Remember-all children are different! They learn to read at different rates and times. However, teachers will work with your child to achieve goals in reading.

What does math look like in Kindergarten? Hands-on exploration of a variety of mathematical concepts Emphasis on conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills Large and small group experiences Content strands focused on: geometry, measurement, number sense, operations and computation, patterns

What does writing look like in Kindergarten? Kindergarten students are encouraged to write about a topic of their choice… Kindergarten students are encouraged to use conventional spelling for common or familiar words and developmental spelling for less common words Developmental Spelling refers to a children’s attempt to use what they already know about letters and sounds to attempt to write words. Research indicated that encouraging developmental spelling promotes children’s understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds (Templeton & Bear, 1992) Teacher modeling their own writing Student sharing opportunities
