GCSE Reform Ms Hilton-Peet

Why and how are GCSEs changing? GCSEs and A levels in England are being reformed, to match the best systems in the world and keep pace with universities’ and employers’ demands. GCSE content will be more challenging but still suitable for all abilities GCSEs will be graded on a new scale of 9 to 1 rather than A* to G, with 9 the highest grade. This distinguishes clearly between the reformed and unreformed qualifications Increased rigour of GCSEs to ensure that reformed qualifications meet the needs of users now and in the future and are of comparable demand to the best in the world.

Reformed GCSEs

When do these reforms affect GCSE students? All subjects your children are taking will be graded 1-9 except technology and business.

English Mrs McDonough

GCSE English The current year 11’s will be the second cohort of students to sit the new GCSE. The timetable of exams is as follows. English Language 8700/1 Explorations in creative reading and writing 1h 45m 5th June 2018 am 8700/2 Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives 8th June 2018 English Literature 8702/1 Shakespeare and the 19th century novel 1h 45m 22nd May 2018 am 8702/2 Modern texts and poetry 2h 15m 25th May 2018

English - a quick reminder There are actually two qualifications: GCSE English Language (AQA) GCSE English Literature (AQA) They are exam only – no coursework or controlled assessments. Speaking and Listening assessments may need to be recorded.

GCSE English Language

GCSE English Literature Literature Paper 1 1 hour 45 minutes. 40 % of Literature GCSE. Two sections. Section A – Macbeth Includes one extract question and one whole text question. Section B – A Christmas Carol Literature Paper 2 2 hour 15 minutes. 60% of total Literature marks. 3 sections: Animal Farm, Poetry Anthology and unseen poetry texts. Assesses comparison.

Term 1 Term 2 and 3 Key Dates Macbeth Unseen poetry section of Literature Paper 2. Revision of : Language Paper 2/RAP activities on all PPEs. Speaking and Listening.* Revision will include preparation for all papers in both subjects. There is only enough time for approximately four – six lessons per literature text (including anthology poems). This makes it even more crucial that pupils revise at home. We can focus on SKILLS not knowledge. Y11 PPEs Literature Paper 2 Language Paper 2 Beginning 18th September. Language Paper 1 Early November. Literature Paper 1 Language Paper 1 and 2 Beginning 20th February.

Don’t forget mini quote books - £3 each Homework Please, please buy the texts! ‘Macbeth’ Oxford School Shakespeare ISBN 9780198324003 ‘A Christmas Carol ‘ Puffin ISBN 9780141324524 ‘Animal Farm’ Penguin ISBN 9780141036137 Pupils will be set both weekly homework and longer project/research based tasks. Whole cohort homework will be set on Mondays and due in on Thursdays. Class teachers will also set more specific homework for their own classes. Homework will be on Show My Homework however… as they are closed book examinations, pupils will also be required to re read texts and learn quotes. This is ongoing and may not always be set as the homework for that week – it will be an expected extra. Pupils are encouraged to create a revision file – they can add their own independent research. Don’t forget mini quote books - £3 each

Mathematics Mrs Taylor

GCSE Mathematics The current year 11’s will be the second cohort of students to sit the new GCSE. The timetable of exams is as follows. Foundation Paper 8300/1F Non Calculator 1h 30m 24th May 2018 am 8300/2F Calculator 7th June 2018 8300/3F 12th June 2018 Higher Paper 8300/1H Non Calculator 1h 30m 24th May 2018 am 8300/2H Calculator 7th June 2018 8300/3H 12th June 2018

Higher or Foundation? We use AQA exam board. The content in the foundation paper is easier. Grades available in a foundation paper are now the equivalent of a grade B and below (Grades 1 to 5). Grades available in a higher paper are equivalent of a grade C and above (4 to 9). For both papers if you fall below the minimum grade it is a fail. The structure of the assessments is identical for both. The students are regularly assessed and will be put on the most appropriate tier to help maximise their performance.

What we expect from the students? Bring all the necessary equipment. Excellent attendance and punctuality. Excellent behaviour. Greater independence and responsibility.

How will we get there?

What is targeted revision? Diagnosis Therapy Testing
