Warm Up Give me a ONE Word definition for Constitution. Name the 3 Branches of Government What are the first 10 Amendments of the Constitution called?

Bill of Rights The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments (additions) to the Constitution that define our individual rights. These rights keep the federal government from having too much power.

The 1st Amendment has 5 Parts

1st Amendment Freedom of Speech

1st Amendment Freedom of Religion

1st Amendment Freedom of the Press

1st Amendment Freedom of Assembly (right to gather a group)

1st Amendment Freedom to Protest

2nd Amendment Right to bear arms (carry a gun)

3rd Amendment No soldiers in homes (gets rid of the quartering act)

4th Amendment No unreasonable search and seizure. (Police must have a search warrant)

5th Amendment Freedom from self incrimination No double jeopardy Right to a grand jury

6th Amendment Right to a speedy trial by jury

7th Amendment Right to a trial in cases worth over $20

8th Amendment freedom from unreasonable bail and cruel punishments

9th Amendment rights not listed in 1-8 are reserved (citizens have more rights)

10th Amendment U.S. has only powers given to it by Constitution (other powers belong to states or the people)
