Alive-O 4 Term 2: Lesson 4 part 1 The Last Supper

Class Passover Celebration Materials: Crackers or brown bread. Candles

Sign of the Cross Teacher: We light our candle. We know that God is with us as we listen to the story of how Jesus shared the Last Supper with his friends.

The Last Supper On the first day of the Passover celebration, Jesus, his friends and followers discussed the preparations they would make for the Passover meal.

Jesus sent some of them to a house that he knew in the city of Jerusalem. There they would prepare a big room and food for a meal.

They were very busy. They set out the room They were very busy. They set out the room. They had to get some herbs and a one-year-old lamb.

They had to make some unleavened bread and buy some red wine They had to make some unleavened bread and buy some red wine. When Jesus and the others arrived, everything was ready.

When evening came, everyone sat down to eat the Passover meal.

They said special prayers.

They shared their stories about Moses leading the people out of Egypt, and they shared their special memory of things that had happened in times past.

This Passover was the same as every other Passover until, as they were sharing the special food and wine, Jesus did something that was very different to every other Passover.

He took the unleavened bread and blessed it and broke it and shared it out among his friends and followers. He said: This is my body, take it and eat it.

Then he took the cup o f wine Then he took the cup o f wine. He blessed it and said: This is the cup of my blood, take it and drink it.

Jesus’ friends and followers had never seen this done, or heard these words spoken, at a Passover meal before. This was new. At first they weren’t sure what Jesus meant, but he said to them: Do this in memory of me.

When the supper was over, Jesus and his friends went off to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray.

Teacher: Let us pause in silence to remember what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Jesus often shared bread with his friends. We know that God Our Creator and Father is with us today as we share unleavened bread with one another. Let us remember the times we have shared bread with our families, our friends and our classmates. All: Blessed be God forever.

Teacher: We remember the people who baked the bread Teacher: We remember the people who baked the bread. All: Blessed be God forever. We remember that God our Creator gives us life.

Teacher: At the Last Supper Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it saying: Do this in memory of me. All: Blessed be God forever. Teacher: We prepare to share our unleavened bread in memory of Jesus. All: Jesus blessed, Jesus broke, Jesus shared bread.

Teacher: God Our Creator, bless this bread Teacher: God Our Creator, bless this bread. May it nourish and remind us to share food with those who are hungry. (Pass the crackers/bread to each person.) Say/sing Grace Before Meals before the bread is eaten.

Sign of the Cross Eat the bread when everyone has taken some bread/crackers. When the bread has been eaten sing/say Grace After Meals. Sign of the Cross
