Ceramics-Response to a painting Final Exam Project

OBJECTIVES Your final exam project is worth 20% of your entire grade. You will constructing a 3- Dimensional sculpture based off of a 2 Dimensional work of art. The 2D work of art can be a painting, a drawing, a photograph, a sketch, etc. You will take elements that are in your chosen painting –such as line, shapes, forms, colors, etc. to develop your sculpture. 3 Dimensional Sculpture can be realistic, abstract, or a combination of both. This should be a large sculpture. Whether you construct something tall, or wide, it should be LARGE. This is your final exam project and should be the best and most challenging work you have done all term. Students will pull observable elements from their chosen 2D work of art, such as specific shapes, forms, objects, and will incorporate these into a 3D sculpture. Students will use multiple hand building methods in combination with one another to achieve a successful work of art. You can combine slab construction, coils, the hollowed form method, and or tile creation in this assignment

Georgia O’Keefe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was an American artist. She is best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American Modernism".

Her paintings strike a balance between realism and abstraction as she zooms in in her compositions and paints larger than life flowers. Some of her paintings are so composed so that the viewer is at first unsure of what he or she is looking at.

Think about the shapes you are creating. Geometric, or regular shapes are best constructed using the slab method. This sculptor was inspired by the simplified planes and angles of the mountains in this painting. Do you consider this sculpture to be abstract or realistic? How could you improve upon this sculptures design and add to the complexity?

What shapes/colors/textures do you see being used in the sculpture, that were pulled from the painting?

Salvador Dali The Temptation of St. Anthony Gian Bernini’s Elephant Unveiled in 1667 in Rome, Italy Bernini is perhaps the most renowned sculptor And architect from the 17th century and Is known for establishing the Baroque style

You will take elements from a 2D work of art to create a 3D work of art. You are not COPYING someone’s art, but rather, are reinterpreting it.

Sally Trace What construction methods do you think were used for this sculpture? What shapes do you see being utilized that are in both the 2D painting and the 3D design? Bruce Gray
