FLUKA Muon Calculations For Electronic Applications

Motivation Common interest are muons a possible issue if yes, under what conditions Thus, a detailed GCR model available in FLUKA; recently more used TRIUMF beam and measurements combined with component modelling

GCR in FLUKA Primary cosmic ray spectra and interplanetary modulation according to measured solar activity on a day-to-day basis are available Geomagnetic effects are implemented with full multipole expansion Extensive benchmark against available muon and hadron measurement data Used by several laboratories (Frascati, Siegen, Bartol, Houston, GSF, Sacley) for simulating the radiation fields generated by cosmic rays in the atmosphere and/or inside spacecrafts

Muon Benchmark - CAPRICE Open symbols: CAPRICE data Full symbols: FLUKA Momentum bin (GeV/c) Primary spectrum normalization ~AMS-BESS Astrop. Phys., Vol. 17, No. 4 (2002) p. 477 Atmospheric thickness (g/cm2)

BESS Spectrometer m- p He Balloon-borne Experiment with Superconducting Spectrometer The BESS spectrometer has collected data at different cut-offs, altitudes, solar modulation Up to 100 GeV: ESS muons @ Mt Norikura(1999) 2,700 m ASL `Cut-off:11.2 GV m- p He Vertical muons

Benchmark Earth Surface Angle integrated (78-90deg, left) and double differential muon fluxes, measured close to the horizonta line TelAviv. Data from O.C. Allkoferetal. NPB 259,1, (1985).

Proton/Muon LET SEE impact caused by muons – correlating with proton problematic B.D. Sierawski et al (link)

Main Questions How to best couple beam measurements with atmospheric ones into a benchmark Instrument calibration and full Monte- Carlo (FLUKA) modelling How to relate it to present and future technologies Monte-Carlo modelling and device response -> fed into scaling approach Direct measurements and model comparison

Status Main question: How many of the ‘muons’ actually contribute significantly to the SER How does it change in location/technology Discussions started with TRIUMF Good ideas how to proceed A possibly interested student, but not before summer If there is somebody interested, available, one could start working on it earlier
