The Life of David – 14 2 Samuel 6:1-12

23 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth... 24 such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. (John 4:23-24)

Our text records the story of David’s two attempts to bring the ark of God up to Jerusalem.

Our text records the story of David’s two attempts to bring the ark of God up to Jerusalem. Each attempt has three elements:

a procession filled with celebration

a procession filled with celebration a blessing

a procession filled with celebration a blessing a death

The First Attempt to Bring the Ark Up (6:1-12a).

1 David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. (2 Samuel 6:1)

2 He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. (2 Samuel 6:2)

3 They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart (2 Samuel 6:3)

4 with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it 4 with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. (2 Samuel 6:4)

5 David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. (2 Samuel 6:5)

1 O LORD, remember David and all the hardships he endured. 2 He swore an oath to the LORD and made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: (Psalms 132:1-2)

3 “I will not enter my house or go to my bed- 4 I will allow no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, (Psalms 132:3-4)

5 till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.” (Psalms 132:5)

How different David was from Saul, who showed no concern for the ark of God.

But David is consumed by the ark.

The Death of Uzzah and the Halting of the Royal Procession (6:6-10). 6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. (2 Samuel 6:6)

7 The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. (2 Samuel 6:7)

8 Then David was angry because the LORD’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. (2 Samuel 6:8)

9 David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” (2 Samuel 6:9)

10 He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. (2 Samuel 6:10)

11 The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household. (2 Samuel 6:11)

The Lord Blesses the House of Obed-Edom (6:11-12a). 11 …the LORD blessed [Oded-edom] and his entire household. (2 Samuel 6:11, NIV)

What This Teaches Us Today:

What This Teaches Us Today: To worship the LORD, you must be consumed by your desire to worship Him.

2. When you worship the LORD, you must come to Him as He desires.

3. There is no excuse for ignorance.

4. Not knowing God’s will ends in death. 6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
