Weather Tools S1E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather patterns. b. Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar seasonally, and graphically.

Can you think of a tool that is used to measure weather? What are tools? Can you think of a tool that is used to measure weather?

Thermometer A tool used to measure how hot or cold it is outside. Thermometers have different scales. We measure in Fahrenheit!

Barometer A tool used to measure air pressure The weight of air pushing on the earth’s atmosphere Low pressure High pressure Cloudy Skies Clear Skies

Hygrometer A tool used to measure humidity How much water is in the air?

Anemometer A tool used to measure the wind speed How fast is the wind blowing?

Wind Vane A tool used to measure the DIRECTION of the wind The arrow points in the direction from which the wind is blowing

Rain Gauge A tool used to measure the amount of rainfall

Katie wants to measure the amount of moisture in the air Katie wants to measure the amount of moisture in the air. She does not want the water in the air to make her hair CRAZY. What instrument should she use?

You’re right - HYGROMETER!

Mrs. Hartman plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat Mrs. Hartman plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat. First, she must know how fast the wind is blowing to see if it’s appropriate to sail. What instrument should she use?

You’re right - ANEMOMETER!

Mrs. Little wants to make sure that she dresses Baby Kai correctly when she brings him to visit us. In order for her to know the temperature outside, what instrument should she use?

You’re right - THERMOMETER!

Mr. Snow just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it Mr. Snow just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it. Before he flies it, he must knowthe DIRECTION of the wind. What instrument should he use?

You’re right - WIND VANE!

A meteorologist observes some dark rain clouds outside A meteorologist observes some dark rain clouds outside. He speculates that there is LOW air pressure. What instrument should he use to determine the air pressure?

You’re right - BAROMETER!

Ryan is working on his Science Fair project Ryan is working on his Science Fair project. He plans to measure the amount of rainfall that has fallen in his neighborhood over the past two weeks. What instrument should he use?

You’re right - RAIN GAUGE!

You are a weather tool genius!!!
