My week and weekend…

News/Plans Test grades are in… Monday: First Period Wednesday: Fourth & Fifth Period Thursday: Sixth Period Friday: Seventh Period Test corrections will be checked on Wednesday!

APK Using a search engine, look up the definition for Meteorology *What word are you looking for? Type you answer on Nearpod

EQ: What is a meteorologist & how do they predict weather? Everyone tell me the EQ Tell me the important words Type the EQ on your iPad

Lesson Importance: WHY? Why do you need to know What is a meteorologist & how do they predict weather? Think Share with your group. I will pull sticks to share with me.

Meteorologist study weather patterns to predict the weather. These complex patterns of changes & movement of water in the atmosphere determined by winds, landforms, ocean temps & currents, and convection are major determinants of local weather patterns and climate. Technology has enhanced our ability to measure & predict weather patterns.

TAPPLE: What is the best explanation for meteorologists to study weather patterns? To make weather maps To predict weather To be on TV To know how to dress for that day

Climate: Climate is the statistics of weather, usually over a 30-year interval. Measured by looking at patterns of variation in… Temperature Humidity atmospheric pressure Wind Precipitation atmospheric particle count ..over a long period of time. Weather = short term /// Climate = long term

Quick Venn Diagram On your I-pad, make a Venn diagram (big enough to write in). Discuss in your group how to fill in the diagram & fill it in. Climate Weather

Quick Venn Diagram On your I-pad, make a Venn diagram (big enough to write in). Discuss in your group how to fill in the diagram & fill it in. Climate Weather Climate is the statistics of weather, usually over a 30-year interval Used by meteorologists weather, in that weather only describes the short-term conditions of these variables in a given region.

What can affect climate in local regions? Latitude Elevation Topography Global winds Ocean Currents

Latitude the sun’s rays directly strike the equator (latitude 0) & cause regions near the equator to be warmer. Generally as latitude increases, the temperature of the area decreases.

Stand Up or Sit Down Generally as latitude increases, the temperature of the area decreases. Stand up if true or stay seated if false.

2. Elevation: within troposphere as altitude increases, temp decreases. 3. Topography (shape of land): Mountains and valleys effect the movement of air masses & therefore affect weather conditions a region experiences.

Everyone stand up! The higher you go in the troposphere… Show me with your body what happens to the temperature?

Elevation: colder in the mountains

4. Global winds: provide a predictable pattern for the movement of air in a specific regions & are named after the direction the come from. 5. Ocean currents: circulate heat energy. Air masses that originate over regions as the oceans are moved with currents & affect the climate of costal regions.

Questions… How are global winds named? What do ocean currents circulate?

Meteorologist use weather tools to predict weather: 1.Anemometer: measures wind speed & indicates a change in atmospheric flow patterns 2.Wind vane/weather vane: show wind direction blows from advancing air masses 3.Sling psychrometer or hygrometer: measures humidity (humidity in the % of water vapor in the air) Increased humidity can be associated w/ a high possibility of precipitation 4.Barometer: measures air pressure—rise in reading indicates fair weather & a fall in reading indicates stormy weather advancing 5.Thermometer: measures temp—changes in air masses result in changes in temps.
