Sweet Jellybean Graphing Amanda Fabiano EDTC 633 Tools and Concepts for Data Analysis Spring 2017

General Information Target Audience: Kindergarten, Ages 5-6 23 students Classroom Environment: Engaging Fun Respectful

Goals and Objectives SWBAT identify same and different by the attribute of color. SWBAT sort objects by one attribute such as color. SWBAT make and read a real graph. SWBAT input data collected into an Excel spreadsheet. SWBAT create a graph in Excel using their data with adult support.

Standards Mathematical Practice: CCCS K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Technology: NJCCCS 8.1.2.A.5 Enter information into a spreadsheet and sort the information.

Activities Objectives: SWBAT identify same and different by the attribute of color. SWBAT sort objects by one attribute such as color. SWBAT make and read a real graph. SWBAT input data collected into an Excel spreadsheet. SWBAT create a graph in Excel using their data with adult support. Procedure: (Day One) Students will each receive a plastic Easter egg filled with jellybeans. Students will sort the jellybeans on the sorting mat. Students will record their data onto the jellybean graph. (Day 2) Students will enter their data onto a shared Excel spreadsheet that will be created by the teacher. Students will use their data to create a graph in Excel with adult support. Materials: Easter egg filled with jellybeans, sorting mat, jellybean graph, crayons, pencils, computer, and Excel spreadsheet

Examples Use of the Fill Series feature to number students View different portions of the worksheet at once using the split screen feature

More Examples Create formula’s by using Excel’s built-in functions (Sum, Min, Max, and Range) Conditional Formatting to highlight a total of 5 or greater of a color or a total of less than 1 of a color

More Examples Hyper linking to other documents or web pages (Links can be found on a separate sheet)

More Examples Graphs Graphs can be created to compare individual data, small group data, or whole group data. These graphs can be used to compare how many jelly beans each student received of each color. Students can look to see which color had the most, least, and if any color had the same amount.

More Examples Graphs

Evaluation and Assessment Teacher observation Sweet Jellybean Graph (paper copy) Excel spreadsheet Excel graph Score on rubric

Brainy Bits 1 Cerebral Lobes: Temporal Lobe: Responsible for auditory processing and language comprehension Parietal Lobe: Responsible for sensory information such as taste, temperature, and touch Occipital Lobe: Responsible for visual processing Frontal Lobe: Responsible for thinking, planning, decision making, and speaking fluently Cerebral Lobes: Temporal Lobe: Following directions Parietal Lobe: Sorting jelly beans and using the computer Occipital Lobe: Graphs Frontal Lobe: Transferring data from the graph to the spreadsheet and comparing data to see which color has more/less/same

Brainy Bits 2 S: Inputting data into an Excel spreadsheet A: Use of Excels’ built in functions for sum, min, max, and range M: Use of the data to create a graph in Excel R: Use of the data from the class to create a graph in Excel S: Replaces paper copy of the graph A: Improves the task process by allowing students to see what color had the most/least/same M: Improves the task process by allowing the students to display their data as a visual R: Improves the task process by allowing the students to compare data
