Drug Misuse The incorrect use of a prescription or OTC drug Examples: using someone else’s prescription Taking the wrong dosage Taking a drug too often
Drug Abuse The intentional use of a drug without medical or health reasons Examples: Taking illegal drugs Drinking cough syrup to feel buzzed
5 ways drugs can enter your body 1. By mouth swallowing a pill capsule, or liquid Travels to the stomach and small intestine, then is absorbed into the blood stream
5 ways drugs can enter your body 2. By injection Using a syringe and a needle Must be dissolved in a liquid Goes directly under the skin into a muscle or blood vessel
5 ways drugs can enter your body 3. By inhalation Through the nose or mouth Enters the bloodstream quickly through the lungs
5 ways drugs can enter your body 4. By implantation Surgically implanted or placed under the skin, where they are released into the blood stream

Indication for use The symptom or condition for which an OTC drug should be used
Side Effect An unwanted body change that is not related to the main purpose of the drug
