The English Travel Market in Malta 2016 Based on NSO TEFL Release dated 17 March 2017

Total Foreign Students to Malta: 2006-2016 In year 2016, a total of 76,730 students followed courses at local English language specialised schools in Malta, recording an increase of 1.6% or 1,206 more students when compared to year 2015. During the last ten years (2006-2016), this segment grew by an average annual rate of 1.52%. © Copyright Showeet.com

Top Source Markets Italy 24.5% Germany 14.2% France 11.1% Russia 5.4% The majority of students attending English language courses in Malta came from Italy (24.5%), Germany (14.2%) and France (11.1%). Main Source Markets Most source markets registered a positive performance in year 2016, with France recording the largest absolute increase of 860 students, followed by Italy with an increase of 842 students. Source markets showing growth potential include the Brazil, Poland, Turkey, Japan and Colombia. English Language Students by Month 2016 July was the busiest month for English Language specialised schools with 19,334 arrivals, accounting for 25.2% out of the annual total. This was followed by August and June with a share o 12.9% and 11.0% of total arrivals respectively. December was the least busy month, with just over 1,000 students. Seasonality As in the previous years, the peak summer months of July to September attracted the majority of students (with a share of 45.6% out of total). During year 2016, the months of April to June attracted 27.5% of incoming students. The second and third quarters of the year each registered a positive performance. On the contrary, the winter months of January to March, with a share of 15.1% out of total students, recorded a negative performance (receiving 2,873 less tourists). © Copyright Showeet.com 9

Type of Course Followed General English Intensive English The most popular course offered by specialised English Language schools was General English. This course accounted for almost seven out of ten students attending during year 2016. This was followed by the Intensive English course, with 17.2% of total students. English specific courses, including Business English, had a share of 5.8% of total students. Out of the top six EFL markets, the share of General English stood highest amongst Austrians, attracting 91.6% out of total Austrian students. Around one fifth of French and German students followed the Intensive English course. Furthermore, this course was also sought by smaller EFL markets like Belgium, Colombia, Switzerland, Hungary and Japan. Type of Accommodation Used The larger share of students (27.6%) resided with host families. The other collective accommodation category, including residences, hostels and guest houses, was the second most popular type of accommodation used, utilised by 23.8% of students. Other accommodation, including accommodation not provided by the school, attracted 22.0% of students. 16.8% of students chose to stay in hotels, mainly within 3-star hotels (9.0%) and 4-star hotels (7.7%). © Copyright Showeet.com 12

Longer stays were prevalent among students from Colombia (13.5 weeks), South Korea (10.2 weeks) and Turkey (6.2 weeks). This age category registered an increase of 13.0% when compared to year 2015. The second largest age category comprise students aged 18-25, with a share of 20.6%. This was followed by the 16 to 17 year old's with a share of 18.6% out of total students. These two age categories both registered a decline of 4.5% and 2.7% respectively. Gender of Students Female students outnumber males and accounted for 60.4% of the entire student population. Staff in Specialised English Language Schools In 2016, total staff in English language specialised schools numbered 2,020, of which 60.4% were teaching staff and 39.6% were non-teaching staff. The largest share of teaching staff (36.3%) were between 18 and 24 years of age. Female teaching staff accounted for 72.1% of total teaching staff. The larger share of teaching staff (60.9%) were casual part-timers; the larger share of non-teaching staff (61.3%) were employed on a full-time basis.
