Collegiate Chapter Guide 7-Step Plan

Who We Are Mission: Coaching for Literacy uses the unique power of sports to create a movement, raise awareness, fund literacy work, teach children to read and change the future. Goal: To create a brighter future for every community in America. Our Programs: CFL is creating a movement through our following programs: Coaching for Literacy Awareness Games Coaching for Literacy Experience Games Collegiate Chapters Revitalizing Literacy Through Sports

Step 1: Get Started Goal: Establish your chapter with Coaching for Literacy and begin to build a foundation for future success Next Steps: Complete the Coaching for Literacy Form A Chapter Application to start a chapter Apply with your school to be an official organization on campus Seek a faculty advisor to guide your effort and be resource on campus

Step 2: Chapter Management Goal: Organize the Collegiate Chapter to achieve success Next Steps: Recruit the right members CFL Recommendation: Chapter size should be 20-30 members who are representative of a diverse student body and passionate about helping others and CFL’s work. Complete the basic membership requirements: Fill out the Policy Statement Complete the Join A Chapter form Elect leaders for specific positions and then have the remaining members join their teams based on their interests and skill-sets CFL Recommendation: President, Vice President, Public Relations Chair, University Liaison, Athletics Liaison, Fundraising Director, Event Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Treasurer, Recruitment Chair Establish and enforce rules for membership: Ensure all forms are completed Require a certain level of attendance during your chapter meetings Set expectations for involvement and communicate that if a member is not participating they will be asked to step-down Remember to keep recruiting! You always need new members!

Step 3: Volunteer Goal: Provide consistent volunteer support to CFL’s local literacy partner Next Steps: CFL staff will connect your team to the local literacy program Send members to local literacy program for volunteer work CFL Recommendation: Encourage each member to commit to volunteer weekly and no less than 2 hours per month with the literacy program Chapter provides monthly report of volunteer hours to CFL staff Each member must adhere to the policies of CFL and the partner literacy program

Step 4: Host A CFL Event Goal: Host a Coaching for Literacy event to raise money and awareness for your local literacy program Next Steps: CFL staff will meet with you to plan and support your fundraising effort You select an approach to host an event on your campus Option 1: You may be able to help us with a Coaching for Literacy Experience Game Option 2: Get creative! You can do whatever works for your chapter to raise funds and awareness on your campus! CFL Recommendation: Book a bar, grab a band and have a party. Tell the bar you that you want to charge a cover and that they will make 100% on drinks. Throw the party. Give the money raised to your partner literacy program. CFL staff will support your execution of the event

Step 5: Fundraise Goal: Each member finds two people to donate to Coaching for Literacy’s monthly donor campaign – The HomeField Advantage (HFA) Next Steps: CFL staff will provide an email for you to share Send out provided email to friends and family to support the work you’re doing to Fight for Literacy Each member needs to find two people to become HFA donors and will then be entered into a raffle to win $1,000 toward an experience or purpose approved by CFL staff (for each additional 2 donors, member will be entered again into raffle) HFA donations range from $10 - $250 per month Helpful Links Donate Page Impact Promise

Step 6: Raise Awareness Goal: Help us raise awareness in the Fight for Literacy Next Steps: Social Join the Fight for Literacy by signing our pledge Follow / Like Coaching for Literacy on our social media channels Facebook Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Complete the Get Social initiative Social Media Activities One elected member will coordinate all social media Each chapter will have its own Facebook All other social media is through CFL’s accounts (passwords and usernames will be provided by CFL staff) Post photos of meetings, volunteer work, event, etc

Step 7: We Support You Goal: CFL staff provides the support necessary for Collegiate Chapter members to have an amazing experience Next Steps: New members will receive a Peter Millar knit-polo Member who raises the most funds for the HomeField Advantage program will have $500 towards a trip, event or concert of their choice Let us know whenever you need a recommendation for work or internships We will sign-off on volunteer hours We will work to offer class credit when applicable Interested in learning how to run a non-profit? Apply for our summer internship program
