Best Practices for an Internship Program Outline responsibilities prior to start -Why do we want an intern? Create a job description with key areas of qualifications and responsibilities Provide interns with real work assignments Hold an orientation: get on the same page Provide work space Attend meetings/events: be a representative Conduct exit interviews Information courtesy of NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers)

Getting Started Why start an internship program? Timeline: be ready to hire 8 months before start Statistics from 2015 - FAQ 72.7% of interns are offered full-time Work duties for interns and co-ops has remained mostly unchanged over the last several years. According to responding employers, analytical/problem solving tasks continue to be the main focus, followed by project management and communications. Overall, the average hourly wage to interns at the bachelor’s degree level have remained virtually unchanged over the past seven years, and currently stands at $17.69 (2016 Internship and Co-op Survey Report) http://www.naceweb.org/uploadedfiles/content/static-assets/downloads/executive-summary/2016-internship-co-op- survey-executive-summary.pdf

Academic Requirements Why do we have internship requirements for Students? Understand the Academic Requirements of the Intern In particular Major requirements Understand the Requirements for the Employer as it relates to Academic Requirements Some can be very simple allowing ease of the employer to take on interns Others can be very complex

RELATIONSHIPS AND NETWORKING!!! BENEFITS TO THE: Student Employer Faculty University

Paid or Unpaid????? According to The Department of Labor, the following six legal criteria must be applied when making a determination if an internship is required to be paid. 1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment. 2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern. 3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff.

Paid or Unpaid????? (cont.) 4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern and on occasion, it's operations may actually be impeded. 5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship. 6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
