What does a School Counselor Do? Counselors support student development in three main areas: Academic Planning College & Career Research (our C&CCtr is your 1st stop!) Social & Emotional Support How does our State and National Association guide our work? TDOE’s Model & Standards for School Counselors: begins 2018-19 American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) statement on the Role of the High School Counselor

What Does This Look Like? Examples of What We Do/Provide: Help students tie course selections to future goals Develop 4+ Year Plans Track student progress towards graduation Offer suggestions for Study Skills, Time Management Help guide Post-Secondary planning Provide support for dealing with Life Problems Help teens cope with Stress Place attention to current Crisis Situations above everything else Take any statement of harming self or others SERIOUSLY! see Suicide Prevention & Resources here and on BHS Website Examples of What We Don’t Do Provide: Promise the “perfect schedule” Provide ongoing Therapy we’re not licensed Mental Health, A&D, Family or other Counselors we have a Masters in Education and can provide short-term support

12th TN Promise STUDENT DEADLINES Oct. 5, 2017 (8:45 am) BHS senior class meeting Nov. 1, 2017 - Deadline to Apply for Tennessee Promise scholarship at www.tnpromise.gov By January 16, 2018, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on www.fafsa.gov. April 17, 2018 - BHS Mandatory Meeting 5:30 pm By SPRING Apply to community or technical college Complete 8 hours community service by July 1, 2018

Governor’s School 6 Week Summer Residential Program on 8 different college campuses 11 Programs including Fine Arts The brightest and most talented 10th and 11th grade TN High School students. Application process includes essays, teacher recommendations, counselor recommendations, transcript, and ACT and or PSAT scores. Applications available on our website but due in Counseling Office in October for the Arts and November for the remaining schools.
