6th Grade Syllabus Welcome Students and Parents/Guardians to Next Generation STEAM Academy! I am extremely excited to begin a new adventure with students, parents/guardians this upcoming school year. I am confident that together we can work on making your journey at NGSA a phenomenal academic experience!   Classroom Rules: Appropriate dress attire must be worn at all times. Please refer to the NGSA handbook for specifications. No gum chewing, eating, or drinking of liquids other than water allowed in class. Keep your hands to yourself and be respectful to all others. No unauthorized electronic devices are allowed to be used in the classroom; unless specified by teacher.

Classroom and Homework Grading Policy: The majority of work will be done in class. However, homework will be assigned at the teacher’s discretion. Grades are broken down as follows: A+ 100% - 98% A 97% - 93% A- 92% - 90% B+ 89% - 87% B 86% - 83% B- 82% - 80% C+ 79% - 77% C 76% - 73% C- 72% - 70% D+ 69% - 67% D 66% - 63% D- 62% - 60% F Below 60%

Absent Policy:   As the majority of lessons will be completed in class, students are highly encouraged to refrain from missing school when at all possible. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to collect their work from the class “Absent Box.” They have one day for everyday they are absent to make up work. If work is not completed, credit will not be given.

Understanding Your Child’s Curriculum S.T.E.A.M. “A curriculum based on the idea of educating students in five specific disciplines- science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. S.T.E.A.M. education focuses on the introductory level S.T.E.A.M. courses, as well as awareness of the S.T.E.A.M. fields and occupations. This initial step provides standards-based structured inquiry-based and real world problem-based learning, connecting all five of the S.T.E.A.M. subjects. The goal is to pique students' interest into them wanting to pursue the courses, not because they have to. There is also an emphasis placed on bridging in- school and out-of-school S.T.E.A.M. learning opportunities.” Project-Based Learning “Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real- world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying.”

English-Language Arts- Writing- Nancy Fetzer (and will incorporate some Step-Up-to- Writing) Reading- Class Novels Grammar – Engaged New York https://www.engageny.org/ Spelling – State approved 6th grade spelling (weekly) Mathematics- TPS Publishing Engaged New York: https://www.engageny.org/ Online curriculum generated from New York State Education Department. Common Core and STEM aligned. Lessons are adaptable to allow for teacher preference and flexibility so that classroom instruction can meet students' needs STEM based activities and projects Science- Discovery Education Science Tech Books (STEM aligned) P.E. included each week (Running weekly)

21st Century Learning Skills

Please be Mindful…. Cell Phones Tardies Not allowed to be on person during school hours. Must be turned off and stored in backpack during school hours. Students are considered tardy if they are not in there seats when the second bell rings. Students lose Dojo points for tardies. After THREE tardies in one month, students will serve recess detention.
