The science of MOOCs

Why makes MOOCs different Relies on collaboration and interaction Creating a network of people and information There no right or wrong way to take a course Independency and autonomy of the learner (to a certain degree)

Analyze you target learners. Define clear outcomes. Visualize your course and the overall learning experience you wish students to have. Identify learning modalities and tools. Gather materials. Set format and structure standards. Create content . Create learning assessments . Build your course . Identify and build methods for course evaluation . Market your course . (Conduct pilot with a target learner group.) Monitor materials and learning activities. Respond to students and take part un discussions. Evaluate then identify improvements throughout the course. Close the course. Gather and analyze data and feedback (surveys, satisfaction analysis) . Reevaluate . Iterate .

The Framework Step 2: Analyze and identify Goals: (experimentation, lead generating, inspire/motivate, educate, professional development, build teaching repertoire, personal development) alingning them with institution’s vision Audience (primary and secondary), their size , background, state perquisites, state effort and implication needed, state language used, consider learners with special needs Timelines: When to release? (weekly basis generally) Pace (self paced, instructor lead) Contracts (faculty, institution, provider)

The Framework Step 3: Prepare and develop There are no universal standards that define how course content should be or what structure it should follow, however there are sets of best practices. It is common to divide content into chunks of information that are made as independent as possible. Content could be in the form of: - Videos ( length varies but the advised is between 3 to 12, the use of transcripts, substitutes) - Audios and podcasts - Text (PDFs, Word documents, articles, eBooks, links) - Mix of the above (voice-over ppts and so forth) (=> media creation best practices, legal matters)

The Framework Step 3: Prepare and develop Means of assessment: Quizzes and tests (generally multiple choice machine graded, essays are not very encouraged if it’s a massive course) Projects Involvement in discussions and group work Peer assessment accuracy Means of interaction Elaborate discussion forums (humanizes the experience) Encourage group work and communication on other platforms (build motivation to pursue the course) Build faculty interaction (faculty presence tends to add personality to course)

The Framework Step 3: Prepare and develop Common structure (sample) Introduction Detailed explanation of the course flow, the goals and outcomes, the assessment, the interaction, the team or university... (Link to how to browse through the course ) Course survey (gathering data) Weeks Introduction to the week: Specific outcomes and objectives Subsections Content + assignment Week assignments Explore section Final test Course closure (information about grading and certificates if applies, survey and data gathering, marketing) (Explore sections)

The Framework Step 4: Implement Ensuring a good communication between team members Monitoring the course is key (even though it is time consuming)
