Program Review Presentation April 2012 Outreach/In-Reach Program Review Presentation April 2012

Program Description Brief Description of your program. Outreach/In-Reach services supports American River College’s mission in two ways. The Outreach component recruits students primarily within the college’s feeder districts and provides informational services to the larger community . The In-reach component supports the college’s mission by engaging ARC students in academic and cultural enrichment activities. Students are connected to campus and community support services designed to increase their chances of success. Brief Description of your program. Who are you? One Slide, 2 minutes

Benchmarks In-reach Outreach The strong personal relationships that have developed over the years with area high schools and various community agencies are a major strength of outreach services. Outreach services will continue to be a resource to the community and will represent ARC at events that align with the overall mission of the college. Outreach services will continue to offer specialized college preparation workshops to high school students. Outreach services will continue to link counselors, administrators, parents, prospective students and community representatives to ARC’s programs and services as well as faculty and staff. In-reach Will continue to connect students with on campus support services and programs designed to increase success rates (e.g., Umoja-Sakhu, MASCOT, The Bridge, Cultural Enrichment and Scholarship workshops). In-reach will continue to provide cultural enrichment, scholarship and college enrichment workshops designed to increase student retention and course success rates.

Benchmarks What are the program success indicators? Outreach contacts Umoja-Sakhu course success rates MASCOT program matriculation and enrollment Cultural enrichment survey data Success indicators in development stages are now being assessed. Program -- Challenges The major challenges to outreach services is the lack of updated printed materials and a lack of communication with other areas within the college. It is very important that changes affecting the registration priorities of new students and enrollment timelines are communicated to outreach specialists. Changes to existing ARC programs and the addition of new programs need to be communicated as well. Another challenge is the lack of office space for in-reach activities. An office location that would allow students easier access to outreach specialist is needed. Coordination of the Umoja-Sakhu Learning Community requires a significant amount of one-one-one contact with students during the recruitment and intake process. Additionally, students in the learning community need a place where they can go and connect with Umoja-Sakhu staff and other students. A lack of support staff is another challenge. A student worker is needed to assist with assembling and organizing materials and making telephone calls.

Planning Implications What are the program objectives to address strengths and challenges identified in program review? To continue conducting cultural enrichment workshops for students enrolled in the Umoja- Sakhu Learning Community and other students designed to build self-esteem, increase self-empowerment and cultural pride. To continue scheduling and implementing college preparation workshops for high school students in MASCOT program (first generation, low income students) to disseminate information on college opportunities with the Los Rio Community College District, financial aid and the enrollment process. Continue collaboration with ARC MASCOT counselors to implement college enrichment workshops and other activities designed to enhance MASCOT students first year experience. To continue to schedule and implement workshops for currently enrolled ARC students designed to educate them on the process of finding and applying for scholarships. To continue to maintain regular visits to feeder high schools to maintain relationships with school staff and to disseminate information and materials about ARC and the Los Rios Community College District to students.

Planning Implications What resource allocations are needed to support these objectives? Student help Lap top computer & projection device Office & Storage space Designated space for students to gather (Umoja-Sakhu village) Updated print materials (college brochures) & Outreach supplies
