Bell Ringer Homework Read pp 198-203 What do you know about World War II? How do you think Chicago is related to World War II? Homework Read pp 198-203 (City of Big Shoulders Book) Current Events Blog Last week’s blog (Late Credit) This week’s blog is due Monday (http://mrverdaguer.wordpress.com)

From Depression to… The Great Depression was a global catastrophe. Why? Germany The country’s economy was very dependent on other countries. By the mid-1930s, the German government was facing pressure from its people to fix their economic problems. When the German government began to fall apart, the people decided to turn somewhere else. Italy Benito Mussolini created fascism that united his country. Why is unity important in tough times?

The Rise of Nazi Germany Adolf Hitler Became the leader of Nazi Party and dominated the Reichstag (Congress) He quickly named himself the Supreme Commander (Fuhrer) of Germany in 1933. He began rearming the German army and navy and began to fix the German economy. Hitler enjoyed much popularity with Germans and gave him unlimited power.

Nazi Aggression and European Appeasement 1936 Reoccupying the Rhineland 1938 March- Annexed Austria Sept – Annexed the Sudetenland 1939 March– Invades the rest of Czechoslovakia. Britain and France use the policy of appeasement. What is it?

The European Theater Begins Hitler kept testing France and Britain’s policy of appeasement. Hitler invades Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. What do you think happens? In a months time, Britain and France declare war on Germany. By 1941, France falls to Germany and Britain was next. Why do you think the US has not entered the war yet?

Japan and US Intervention Most Americans saw Nazi Germany as a “European” problem. In the 1930-1940s, American officials were more concerned by the actions of the Empire of Japan. Manchuria China French Indochina The Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy in 1940 The US responded with an embargo of oil against Japan How do you think Japan responds?

Day of Infamy: Pearl Harbor On December 7, 1941, Japan decides to sneak attack the US at Pearl Harbor. Why? Most of the Pacific Fleet was stationed at Pearl Harbor. The US did not expect it, so chance of success would be great. What happens after Pearl Harbor? The US enters World War II by declaring war on Japan. Because of the Tripartite Pact, Germany declares war on the US. Horrific images of Pearl Harbor were seen by all Americans. Created a strong sense of patriotism and a strong homefront.

Exit Card How did Hitler gain power in Germany? Give me some examples. What is the policy of appeasement and how did Hitler take advantage of it? How did the US enter World War II? Can you compare the tragedy at Pearl Harbor with 9/11? Why or why not?
