The Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test – Your Guide Amy Parry

The Current Curriculum Grammar, punctuation and spelling are high priority This is reflected in the new tests for Y2 and Y6 Spelling and handwriting matter! Teachers and children expected to use ‘Standard English’ in the classroom and in writing.

National Curriculum 2014 All children should speak audibly and fluently with increasing command of Standard English Write with grammatical accuracy Demonstrate Standard English in subject/verb agreement (Y2)

The New Test Paper 1 – Spelling (20 marks/15 mins) Paper 2 – Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary (20 marks/20 mins) At KS1 timings are approximate recommendations and the test is OPTIONAL Paper 1 - Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary (50 marks/45 mins strictly timed)) Paper 2 – Spelling (15 mins not strictly timed)

Good to know… Spelling of responses Verb forms – the whole word must be correctly spelt Contractions – the full contraction must be correctly spelt and the apostrophe correctly placed Form punctuation marks correctly Capital letters must be clear and unambiguous. Where letters do not have unique capital letter forms, this means that the height of the capital letter will be similar to the height of letters with ascenders and will clearly be greater than the height of letters that do not have ascenders.
