Boise State University researchers are developing a novel sensor to detect hydrogen gas in storage vessels which can lead to better semiconducting sensor technology. University of Idaho researchers are examining how millions of hectares of dead evergreen trees from bark beetle outbreaks reduce long term carbon storage and can lead to higher CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Researchers from the University of Idaho are using satellite imagery to gauge water usage to improve water management for the state. Idaho Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Idaho received $7 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN IDAHO University of Idaho researchers have teamed up with high school teachers who serve large populations of Native American and Latino students to bring climate science into the classroom. Over 500 kids have participated in Climate Adventures, a hands on experience that teaches them about the local impacts of climate change. The Community Center Afterschool Program model is being piloted by researchers from Boise State University. This program will offer hands-on science activities and computation for 4-6th graders at high need, Title I community centers. This program will bring together university students pursuing a teaching degree with in-service teachers from schools around Boise to focus on student learning and teacher professional development.  The University of Idaho researchers and students offer extended mentoring to Native American students through the HOIST (Helping Orient Indian Students and Teachers) program.
