ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE BUSI 3312 ORGANIZATIONAL Behavior Amna Al-Mattar 200700080

Definition Organizational culture is the collective behavior of humans that are part of an organization, it is also formed by the organization values, visions, norms, working language, systems, and symbols

Is it important? When we got ethics, laws, and society culture is organizational culture important? It influences the way organizational members act. Rather than different directions, the culture creates one direction which creates momentum among the employees.

Dimensions of organizational culture Attention to details innovation and risk taking Stability Aggressiveness Team orientation People orientation outcome orientation

Strong Vs. Weak Culture Strong culture traits can be: Easley understood corporate philosophy Values reinforcement Widely spread and deeply rooted corporate cultures. Careful screening of new employees

Strong Culture A deep abiding commitment to values , believes, philosophy and practicing what is preached Genuine concern for the well being of customers, employees and share holders. Although these are traits of a strong culture, an “one size fits all” culture does not exist.

Weak Culture Lack of core values. No sense of company identity Little unity among departments Weak employee loyalty to the organizational vision and strategy.

Why do weak cultures exists? The human behavior towards change. A “not invited here mind set” mangers. Disregard of ethical standards. The pursuit of wealth by executives.

How employees learn culture? Story telling by upper mangement: By the reoccurring story telling of stories that hold the organizational values. Examples of Stories: Stories of the establishment of a small organization and the position it holds today. Stories about innovation, risk taking and going against the current trend that led to a better position in the market.

How employees learn culture? Rituals: corporate rituals are repetitive sequences of activities that express and reinforce the values of the organization. Examples: Bonuses, rewards and celebrating success by other means like promotions.

How employees learn culture? Material symbols: The general atmosphere at an organization. For an example: Google headquarters: motivation and employee appreciation is felt and displayed throughout the headquarter.

Ethics And Organizational Culture Encouraging ethics in an Organizational Culture is the job of high Organizational leaders. By being a visible role model, communicate ethical expectation, provide ethical training, visibly reward ethical acts and punish unethical ones.

Example of an Organizational Culture Dell Computers. Dell is one of the leaders in the field of “customization”, The Company has a strong mission statement, however their success story is used to deliver the organizational culture intended, motivation, moving forward, risk taking and innovation.

Conclusion Organizational Culture is important as it fill the gap in organizational strategy, between the mission statement and the objectives, it spread the behaviors expected by the employees and unite the employees into a single direction which can be a key factor in the success of the organization.
